stupid question

currently running one 20 galllon thats been cycled with two pengein bio filters

to cycle a new 6 gallon eclipse aquarium (QT tank) could I just plop one of the well established filters (sponge part) into the tank near the filter intake?

to help speed up the process

there is one feeder goldfish in there, i just set up the tank last night.

Hi,

Yes you could do that but why not just put the media (sponge) out of your existing pengiun filters straight in to the new filter?

its called cloning your tank and rids the need to ever cycle from scratch again.

instant bacteria colony, instantly cycled tank...easy peasy

I'm trying to think if this would be ok, how long can the bacteria live without water?
they are both bio wheel filters, but the smaller cycling tank has it all built into the hood so the filter is horizontal not verticle. if i did this i would of course have to remove the charcle since its built into the filter (spongy part) in one piece. and am afraid that the spongy part might clog things up since the smaller tank has a smaller filter. (hmm thinking as i was typing this) i could also put the smaller tanks filter right into the 20 gallons filter cavity

currently ammonia levels are about ready at 3.0 (the gold fish did a great job with this )

currently i have one filter pad sitting right next to the filter intake, practically on top of it.
if the bacteria can live without water for say longer then a minute i might just move some gravel over there too ( the more the merrier)
