i came home very tired, saw brown bacteria forming thought I'll get a cloth and wipe it off. and there were about 4 and i choose the least wet one DIDN'T EVEN RINSE IT. any way wiped it off look up and could see aloud of white stuff on the top of my water, i think it could of been bleach so i did a 60-70 water change which had diluted it. fish acting fine. phew :)

any mistakes like that happen to anyone else?

Eep! I hope your fish are gonna be ok! Better make sure to keep an eye on readings cause if it was bleach... it might kill off your beneficial bacteria.

Newbie mistake my bf made.... he cleaned the inside of our 28gallon when we first got it with Windex. Thankfully though we rinsed and rinsed and rinsed it out (without knowing that the windex was bad to use :p) :X

i put my poor little bn plec who was stuck onto a bit fo bogwood on a black bag once whilst i was about to start cleaning the tank.. Luckily before i started i carried on looking for him (couldn't find him on the wood). I couldn't see him in the tank, so went back to the bogwood and found that he had weged himself in a bit of the bogwood that was difficult to see. He's fine. Doesn't talk to me, but fine.

I don't use any cloths or anything to do with my fish from anything else. They have their own buckets, cloths the lot. I bet you will do this from now on ;)

Hope all is ok..

I was cleaning out the tank a while back with one of those hang on electric gravel cleaners trying to clean sand, not vey good, so took the big tube off and just used the thin pipe for a while, all was ok until I heard a funny noise. Turned everything off and found a minced Khulli wedged in the proppeller part. :rip: Having took the big tube off there was no gauze like protection.

STUPID ME.

Needless to say I dont use it any more and just use the syphon tube straight into a bucket. :good:

I was doing my water change and triming up some plants.....I left the bottle of fertiliser on the rim of the tank....finished up everything and put the lid on,sat down on the couch and started watching tv.About an hour later something caught my eye.It was an empty fertiliser bottle floating around the top of the tank!! DOH! Altho i did do another imediate water change and another the next day, still too much fertiliser got into the system and i had a little algea outbreak that I'm just now getting under control almost 2 months later!

I had *just* finished a water change on my betta - and then decided to hand-feed him with a single granule. Did not realise that about a bazillion more granules were stuck to my other damp fingers until i saw a sea of fishfood floating away and sinking into the tank.
Took for ever getting it all out :S .

I keep all the fishfood on a really high shelf - I'm just waiting for the day when I forget to put it back and discover my toddler has taken it upon himself to give the fishies *lots* of dinner....... :-(

never guess what i did which was even more stupid today i was going to do a water change. normally i get the water out of the bath tub so its nice and warm anyway i normally treat it then mix it but i thought i will take it down and then put all the treatment in. i looked at my guppie fry and the breeder was very dirty, so with out thinking i put them straight in the bucket thinking that i have allready mixed it and all that. i look back and it look like they were all dead moving lifeless doing flips. i saw two moving so i quickly put them in the net breeder in the tank. got the others which looked dead and put them in and...

they were moving they all were fine :) this has been a rollicoaster week.

when i was 6 i poured 6 litres of milk into my dads fish tank as they all looked thirsty  i wiped out most of the tank that day

Apart from the obvious beginner mistake, rinsing the filter media under tap water, I once put my bogwood (quite a large and heavy piece) on top of one of my baby BN catfishes. Amazingly he seemed fine and even more amazingly he's still happy and healthy today.

In the days before I had those little black temperature strips on the front of all my tanks, I once did a water change, diligently switching everything off because I'm a good girl. Completed everything and went to bed, satisfied with my lovely clean-looking tank.

When feeding the guys the next morning, I was horrified to feel the water around my fingers was freezing cold. I'd only forgotten to switch the bloody heater back on, hadn't I? What an idiot. I deserved to lose all my fish that night but miraculously they decided to stay with me.
