OK my question may be a bit silly but is it fine to run an internal filter upside down? basically I want the outlet as close as I can to the bottom of the tank, only way I figure is upside down.

Great question, I've wondered this myself loads of times but not bothered to find out. It might mess with the "clogged" indicator, but in theory should be otherwise OK.

Edit: Just phoned Fluval who say that it will make no difference to their efficiency which way they are, provided they are completely submerged and not deeper than 1M.

Thanks for giving me the kick up the arse I needed to find that out!

The last pump I bought (Penn-Plax internal filter) said it could be used lying down, this could be another option for you.

i know the lfs uses big fluval filters in their big turtle tanks. since there's only about 5 inches of water, the filter is on it's back with the water shooting out like a little fountain.
