I think of all the fish I've ever kept, Kissing Gouramies are even more stupid than the common Goldfish.... They've just got that "ignorrant" expression and absolutely no routines..... for instance.... they will start eating at the surface when they see me..... no food added yet, but they're eating air.... (etc. etc.).....

The most intelligent fish (IMO) would be Oscars... They absolutely know who I am, They know who my wife is and they respond accordingly.

What, in your opinion are the dumbest and most intelligent (aquarium) fish..... (not talking Dolphins here)

I couldn't really say for dumbest, but for most intelligent my female fighter fish was pretty clever. Came when her name was called, responded to voices, footsteps, etc.
Even if she wasn't clever, she was still a very lovely fish

Male guppies, giant danios and male Bettas get the dumbest vote out of the ones I have kept, green terror males and giant danios (also! and just to get a non-cichlid in there) get the cleverest vote.

Mollies i think have to be the stupidest fish i have ever kept! But i think angels are also very clever. Due to this

Since you mentioned Giant Danios.... I have to agree, but I also think Blind Caves are on par with them (despite being blind and finding the food first... They are just dumb)

Angels and Discus are definitely my smartest fish. It seems like the small shoaling fish are all lower on the IQ scale

I laughed when I read about the Gourami's. Yep my moonlights are just the same. I would say out of mine the Eliotti are the most interactive followed by the Bol rams. Also the Gourami's must be dumb because they are the easiest to catch and also swim into the net even when They are not the ones I want to catch.

My Chocolate Gouramis are unusually tame. They love me! :D

Well... since I did mention Kissers..... (not small & shoaling)..... they are as dumb as mud.

 Proof beyond doubt..... You think he reads the lable???.... (Also saw the Convict in the other tank responding.

Haha i didn't even notice that, so i guess firemouths are clever as well!

can i just compliment your tanks aswell they look lush :) and im guna see if my fish do that now lol.... my shoaling fish do seem to swarm near the top when i open the lid for food time tho :D

i think oscars have equal amounts of intelligence and stupidity. yep sure they recognisee you etc etc , but youd think they would be able to realise that bubbles on the waters surface are not food , and that his reflection is not scared of him

I have always believed that fish basically have only three thoughts whic, alone or in some combination, govern pretty much everything they do:

1. Can it eat me?
2. Can I eat it?
3. Can I spawn with it?

That said the dumbest fish I know are forlowellas. It is said they can starve to death a few inches from food. Next would be otos who have developed a great defence mechanism- they pretend the threat doesn't exist and just ignore it.

My four Leopard Bushfish have quickly learnt that food is on its way and they start queueing in the top-right corner, when they see me peel away the insulating curtains/liners/blankets/anti-frost net!
