not exactly an emergency so um...

well, today was fast day for my fish. For my female betta i feed a deshelled pea on fast day. I was told my harlequins will be ok with this, that they will probably just be able to grab the small dusty pieces. Well one piggy little rasbora grabbed a big chunk and swallowed it. Hes swimming around fine, but his mouth is opening and closing pretty fast as if he is still chewing on it. Will he be ok? thank in advance.

well now im sure he ate it, hes not opening his mouth anymore but he is one fat little dude. Scared me! How do i know if he is choking? how do i prevent this...if i squish the pea up too much my betta wont go after it! thanks.

I got the impression that you thought he was choking...I really don't know what to tell you about that. I guess the only way you would know is if you found him dead. Seriously. As for him opening his mouth and closing it really fast....fish do that....sometimes when they are hungry. Are you only giving him peas? Anyhow, maybe you should'nt give him peas...being that you said he won't eat them sqished up. Maybe you should stick to betta food for now. I keep all kinds of foods for my betta, to give him a variety of things to eat. I honestly don't give them pes. (it makes them poo). However if you want some suggestions on what you could feed him try some freeze dried blood worms or freeze dried brine shrimp. They even have a flake food for betta's now rather than pellets. You may want to try that out. Mine is by Tetra, it's called Betta Min tropical melody...this betta blend even includes brine shrimp so that's good too. My betta's love it. They seem to prefer it better than the pellets. Plus it's very inexpensive. You may be able to find some in the pet section at Wal-mart. It comes in a yellow container. I hope it works.

*Don't forget you can buy the bloodworms and brineshrimp in cubes.
