Stuck For Centre Fish Ideas

Hoping to get my first proper aquarium soonish. I am guaranteed the Eheim Aquastar (24x12x12).
I know that it is no beast of a tank. And I am pretty knowledgeable on the whole new tank process and stocking levels (believe me I have been one hell of a research geek).
I either want a South American biotope with a small shoal of neon tetra, or a SE Asian biotope with a small shoal of Harlequin Rasbora. But I am stuck for ideas on a nice centre piece fish. Any suggestions?

I cant figure out how big your tank is but Im going for a south american biotope tank and was thinking of a german blue ram for my centerpiece fish

It's 15 US gallons or 57 liters.

That's pretty small, so I'd go with one of the smaller gouramis, I believe they originate in Asia.

A male gourami and 6-8 rasboras would be pretty cool.
