I noticed that my dwarf gourami was extremely interactive (much more so than my gf's gold and blue) so I decided I'd play with him some. So I put my finger in the tank and he got terrified and took off running. I said oh well fed them and walked off. The next day I put some flake food on the end of my finger and he came right up and ate it. Then the next day I put my finger in without food and he came up and started chewing on it. So I started getting him to chew on my finger then I gave him some food each day. I did this for about a week. Well today I told my mom to stick her finger in there and she shrieked when the little gourami bit her. She started putting her finger back in cause she thought it was cool once she got over it. Before it hit the water little gourami came up to the top and started spraying a jet of water at her finger it was sooooooo cool. Now I'm going to get him to spit at me before I give him food. I love my little gourami. I hope i can find the little guy a couple females, although he seems to be pretty happy at the moment.

HAHAHA..that's soo cool. I'm sure there's a reason they spit water, maybe someone in the gourami section will tell you why.

Reminds me of an archer fish. But he only shoots water like 2-3" archer fish can shoot it 6'

has anyone else seen this happen with their gourami's.

Don't some clams spit? I think so because at the fish market there were clams in this tub and it spit out of the tub.

Don't know about clams but apparently it's normal for gourami's to spit. Did a search (should have done that before I posted)

They spit water to catch flies at water surface, so is perfectly normal to do it whenever they thing food is coming -looks like he's learnt you're the food-monster-creature! Don't think its anything personal, though.

Puffer fish will also spit at you. I've seen many of them do it over the years. Kind of funny watching a fish spit at you. :p

Haha, the gouramis at my LFS do this when they're hungry!! They're on the top shelf and anyone walking under them gets a shower if the lid is open.

No I've never had any of my gourami's do this to me.

But I have had Several different Mollies of different Breeds do this to Me, While I was feeding them, and Would get delayed in putting the Next Pinch of Food in.

It's funny how a Fish can figure out their Caretaker likes a Certain thing, and just starts to do it, Without you really even trying....

And People say Fish are Stupid.... :grr: :grr: :grr: I THINK NOT.... B)

my dwarf gourami does this when I feed them (not every time), it's an attempt to zap things just above the water surface - flies and such.
He's nowhere near as impressive as an archer fish would be - he only manages about an inch or two above the water surface.

How rude, spitting  tut tut. bed with no supper in my house for that.

Yeah, agree with chisnfips. That would be a 5min timeout for sure.

Never had my gouramis do that to me before. They do splash, and get my shirt, but never spit. :)
