My nerite is usually very active and roams about the whole tank. Sometimes he disappears for days at a time because I don't restrict his access into the filter compartment. On Friday evening I spotted him on the front glass burrowing down into the substrate. He was about 3/4 covered. I thought he was not moving but after half an hour he was even deeper. I pulled him out and he has been behaving absoultely normal ever since. The only unusual thing was that morning when I refilled for the water change I noticed that he had remained above the water line while I was doing the change.

Sometimes snails will go above the water line if there is something in the water they dont like, heavy metals ect...and also nerites in nature go from brackish to fresh to brackish to breed, maybe your nerite is going on a walk in search of breeding grounds in brackish water??? Lol hopefully just that, and nothing bad. Good luck.!

Ok probably didn't exlain properly. He was out of the water because I drained the tank for my water change. The strange behaviour was burrowing into the substrate that evening.

Gotcha, ive had mine do that before as well, maybe there was a spot of algae down there the snail missed, nerites are super serious about their algae lol

Apple/mystery snails like to lay their eggs above the water line maybe nerite do to? I am patiently waiting for my nerite replacement snails to arrive. ;)

Nerites lay eggs all over the decor and tank walls rather than above the water line.

I have several species of nerite. The small grey and white speckled one often crawls along the glass just under the surface of the sand. I haven't seen any others do this, though.

Nerites lay their eggs on wood or glass etc (not fussy where) can be a pain to get off. Colourful little things tho.

Are your mystery snails behaving now?
