Strange Lumps On Rainbowfish

Unfortunally the fish died,
it was having trouble breathing and hung around the top of the water all the time and then died over night.
It seemed to get ill really fast.

I was about to put the other rainbow fish in the main tank when I noticed one had something on its bottom lip as if something was dripping from it. They are still in the quarantine tank as I thought if they do have anything wrong with them it would be best to keep them on there own for treatment.

Thanks for all the help with my last fish and for any help to come.

Any chance of a photo? It's very difficult to diagnose problems without seeing the fish. "Mouth fungus" (actually caused by a number of different bacteria), also called Columnaris, is not uncommon. It is very, very infectious and if untreated will wipe out an aquarium. Proprietary remedies are available, but a salt water dip (3.5 g un-iodinized salt in a litre pot of aquarium water; dip fish for 2-10 minutes) is a good first aid approach to stabilise the condition until you get some remedies in.

Cheers,

Neale

Sorry R.I.P.
What colour is the stuff dripping from the lips, does it look like mucas.

Sorry I can't get a photo,
It isn't mucas as it is not actually dripping of, sorry it is hard to explain. It is the same colour as the fish it looks like it is sticking its bottom lip out, they are all swimming and eating and I only noticed the problem with the lip this afternoon.

You mean it looks swollen, like a build up of fluid in the lip area.

It isn't really swollen as the lip seems to be hanging down more than outwards, the lip looks slightly paler than the fish is.

What meds are you using, sounds like the lip going to start to rot away, if its pale it still mouth fungus, columnaris.
Get you some info.

I havn't used any meds yet wasn't sure what was wrong with the fish. I'm starting to think me and rainbow fish are a bad mix as I have never had such bad luck with a type of fish before.

Thanks for the link,

Which meds do you suggest I use and I will get them tomorrow?

I know I have myxazin, don't have primafix.

I will have to look around as I might still have some furanol from when I used it before. I do have aquarium salt would it be worth adding any the tank is about 20 litres with the 4 rainbow fish in.

I would go with the jbl med as long as the issolated, increase aeration.
You can dab salt on the lips like that first article says.

Taken from the link.
Swabbing the mouth of the victim fish with a soft cloth dipped in strong salt solution. Then you must then keep the patreat isolated in a bucket or jar containing a strong salt water.

I have just had a look and have about 8 furanol tablets left which should be enough as it is only a small tank.
I will treat all 4 rainbow fish as you said is contagious and I don't want to pass it on to my main tank.

Thanks for your help and time again.
