there was a tank at my LFS with a scientific name on it, i shuold have noted it down really.
there was obvious differences between male and female.
males were about 2", long, thing, with quite big fins, and quite a bit of colour on them, they were almost halfbeaked' sort of shape, but without the snouth and smaller. the females were the same but smaller, and without the longer fins.

A picture or the scientific name would sure help. I keep a few goodeids but there are dozens of species and I only have about 8. The only thing I have in that group that is long and thin like a halfbeak is A. towerii and they have females the same size as males. There are also lots of Ilyodons, I only keep two of them, that are long and thin compared to typical goodeids and other poeciliids but again are not showing a large difference between males and females in size. My Heterandria formosa are very much different in size between the adult males and females but at under an inch they don't fit the rest of your description very well.

Go visit the store again and get the Latin name! Otherwise this is all rather speculative!

I can't think of any commonly traded livebearers that have females smaller than males. Among poeciliids and livebearing halfbeaks the females are always bigger, often twice the size of the males. I believe this is also true of goodeids as well, though the size difference isn't always so great.

Do look at Celebes halfbeaks. The males are very colourful, and their beaks are short and curled under the chin, so the overall effect is different to that of other halfbeaks. Male Celebes halfbeaks have big, brightly coloured fins that they waggle about in an exaggerated manner.

Cheers, Neale

I was also thinking about Celebes Halfbeaks, but for some reason my mind keeps going back to Threadfin Rainbows. They also have a Halfbeak appearance with the upturned mouth.

They are none of the above, i will go back either tommorow or saturday and get the name noted down, they were stunning little things.
to be honest i was assuming the more colourful, larger of the species were gonna be males.

Were they A featherfin Variety of Guppy, or maybe an Over extended Lyretail Molly

Ohhhhhhhh Javanese Rice Fish, Longfin White Cloud Mountain Minnows, Or the newer Variety Vietnamese Longfins

None of those, they were sort of like the rice fish but fins were a lot longer :good:

I visited the shop today, and im 90% sure they are the species in "BigC"'s avatar, and are just washed out due to being in a bare tank. I'm bringing two home wednesday and they will go in my small cube for now just as quarantine.
