I'm getting a 4ft tank this weekend and plan to move my cichlids in -2 female cons and 3 young jewels. Upgrading from a 3ft tank. I have hard London water pH around 7.5 What other cichlids can I have with these - would angelfish be OK?

no angelfish maybe some dithers such as giant danios or tiger barbs umm maybe firemouths and severums and maybe a jack dempsey or green terror and some catfish like pictus catfish.

My fish ar not shy and don't need dithers. Why not angels, they are CA cichlids too?Won't larger and very aggressive cichlids like green terrors bully the much smaller jewels and cons?

Dithers are not always for shy fish, they are used as target fish also to re-direct agression from eachother and also to trigger spawning as it sets off 'defence mode'

Also they are good as 'extra fish' because they are to fast for the agressive fish to catch.

A green Terror, jack dempsey or Texas would fit nicely, all of which are on parr agression wise with Cons and Jewels.

People underestimate cons and Jewels because of there size, but they are both probably more agressive than both GT's and JD's...but less so than Texas.

If either the cons or Jewels breed (not with eachother, its not possible) then any tank mates other than Dithers will be fodder...a adult male Green Terror could not take a adult breedign males attacks from either species and pound 4 pound, the two fish you own would make mincemeat of most other fish.

People say 'cons are not that bad' those people have never kept a adult male, thye call them 'mini-midas' for a reason, and i have heard storys of adult males cons taking down adult Jaguars when breeding.

I think you should look into 'Tilapia Butterkoferi' (Hornet Cichlid) they are awesome looking fish and a lot tougher than both jewels and Cons....they get to about 12" of nastiness.

Thanks for your advice, didn;t realise my small cichlids could defend themselves against much larger ones like GT. Not sure about the Tilapia though it sounds awesome. Would a 12in fish fit in a 4ft tank? Also. are you sure it wouldn't have young immature jewels and girl cons for dinner? Don't want to lose all my cichlids and end up with one fat tilapia!
I'vejust been offered some yellow lab fry someone is trying to find homes for. They are only 2 miles away so are used to local water. I know you are not supposed to mix SA and African cichlids but would my cons and jewels be OK with them?

if ur going to use anecdotes to suggest that cons are quite vicious, why not also use them to illustrate how vicious the other fish can be?

Not sure the reason for your negative post, but the point is he owns Jewels and Convicts, and my point is these fish at adult sizes when breeding are capable of taking down Cichlids twice there size. and they are both pretty decent sized when fully grown also.

why are you starting a fight? why is it a competition?

the blatant point is these fish are more aggressive than people give them credit for.

hey jewels are not supose to be mixed with cons either as there the same as labs but its funny as i have the same set up at the moment i have a 4ft tank with 2 jewels and a con with odesea barbs and bottom dwellers im thinking of getting a JD and a Nic and then a group of tiger barbs hope this might help

my point was taht you warned the OP about the aggressiveness of convicts but didnt warn him about the other fish u suggested. Hopefully now he can see a more balanced picture.

I wasnt trying to argue, I was trying to work out why u would only warn him of the maximum potential of one fish, and not another.

Not only that, but u talk about breeding convicts (with emphasis on males), the OP states he has 2 female convicts, no males at all.

OK back to the original question. I have
2 female convicts, one striped and one albino
3 young jewels, all siblings from same batch of fry but the largest is twice the size of the smallest who is bullied by him.

Can I add 2 adult angels and 1 inch yellow lab fry? Angels and fry live 3 miles away from me in same area and are used to the same tap water so pH and hardness is not an issue. I am setting up a 4ft tank with lots of hiding places.
