Hi - I have a Juwel Rekord 70 tank - advertised as 70 litres but I think it's more like 60 litres once you account for substate, rocks, plants, filter etc. It currenly has 5 Lemon Tetras which seem to be doing well so far. What would you recommend I can add to these in the future? I have heard conflicting advice on how many fish I should be able to add to it so would appreciate some advice. Thanks :)

your basic 'rule' for stocking is 1" of fish per gallon.

so your tank is about 17g so you can have 17" of fish. you must remember to get the adult size of the fish and work it out on that, not the size they are at the moment or in the fish shop.

however this is just a guideline there are about a zillion exception to the rules and other factors you should take into account, but it gives a good guideline for beginners so you can work out a stocking list based on that rule, post it for us and we'll let you know if there are any problems.

you should also make sure you distribute the fish around the tank, there are top middle and bottom swimmers, you should get a good split between these and then you'll have more sucess.

so if the tetra's are 1" each (this is a guess by the way, check it out for definate!) you've about 12" left in your stocking list,

i would then get 6 cories at 1" each, then 2/3 slightly larger fish at 2/3" each, something like a pair of rams, dwarf gourami's or a trio of rosy barbs could work well :)

Thanks for the advice. The Tetras are about 1.5" which leaves me with 9.5". I have seen Cherry Barbs which look nice so could I get a couple of those (although the Rosy Barbs look nice too in the pics but slightly bigger)? What sort of Cories would you recommend - most of the ones I have seen seem to be bigger than 1"? Is it a good idea to get something that would eat any algae?

Im upgrading to a juwel rekord 70 too! Im adding a couple of corys and an adf and a few shrimp (i wont be including these in the 1" of fish per gallon rule as they dont give off much waste)and that will be it, i dont want to overstock like i have with my current tank, as you can see in my sig!
Corys get to 2" so if i have 3 of them id be just over my limit
Get some guppies and otoclinus (small version of a pleco) are really entertaining to watch going up and down the glass, + they only get to 1.5"!

Do you have a pic of your tank so far???

Im getting some panda/three lined corys

barbs aren't my field of expertise so make sure you double check this info, but my thoughts are

you need 1 male to 2 females, they get about 2" each so thats 6" of your stocking used up.

so that only leaves you 3.5" left to play with, however you can stretch things a little with groud crew like cories cos there's gonna be no one else in they're swimming space or vica versa. so you could get 4/5 of one of the smaller speies of cories such as panda's however these are a little delicate, but if you ask in the cory forum they can make some recommendations for small cories. :)

personally i wouldn't bother with algae eaters, they're generally speaking very messy and need a fair bit of room, they also won't do anywhere near as good a job as you will with very little effort. Plus the time taken to clean off algae every few days is a great opportunity to just take a little time to check over the health of your fish and tank and this could give you an early warning of any problems and make it easier for you to sort them out :)

Thanks Miss Wiggle. :) I did read that Cherry Barbs are okay to keep as a pair but I'll look around some more to check on that. I'll have a browse on the Cory forum.

Connorsbala - I haven't a pic of it yet no - looks nice though - have stuck with fake ones but found some very realistic looking ones from a fish shop which look good. The Lemon Tetras are nice looking fish too. :)

good stuff, i find the beginner forum is great for getting all round advice but you should always back things up with your own research :D

i'm also getting a Juwel Rekord 70, may i also state that the Rekord 70 is about 15.3 gallons, not 17 as stated by miss wiggle above.

15 UK Gallons or 17 US Gallons, in fishkeeping we generally use US Gallons for the measurment, certainly the 1" per gallon thing is based on US Gallons. :good:
