would like some suggestions on what to keep in a 15-20 gallon fish tank. Would like a community tank with fish that swim on the bottom, middle and top. thanks for any suggestions.

thats a good size tank for a small fish community and theres lots you could consider, do you have any species preferences or dislikes?
you could consider some of the smaller tetra species for middle/top, some corys or smaller botia for the bottom, or even dwarf cichlids which are also middle swimmers and very pretty.

The only fish I have really chosen are some platies and mollies and maybe dwarf gourami. Any of your suggestion would be great even if they don't include these fish.

hmm. a pair of dwarf gourami, a group of 6 pygmy corys would be really nice, maybe something else *ponders* (effectively about 12" of fish, inch per gallon n'all that)
a group of tetras, 6-7 depending on the species, theres more than just neons out there! i like bleeding heart tetras, they need quite soft water though, what PH is your water?

A few different ideas spring to mind:

4 khuulie loaches and a school of 6 phantom tetras (2 males, 4 females)

3-4 smallish corys (trilineatus or similar) and a school of glowlight tetras

3 female platies and a school of harlequin rasboras

4 peacock gobies ( 1 male, 3 females) and a school of black neons

trio of honey gouramis (1 m, 2 f) and a school of pygmy corys

trio of cherry barbs (1 m, 2 f) and small group of corys

species tank with neolamprologus multifasciatus (read up on species requirements)

There is really loads you can do with a tank that size.
