Hi, one of the younger members of the family (6yrs) has been showing a lot of interest in keeping some fish. I was wanting to get her a wee 2' 60ltr tank and some exLamprologus multifasciatus ( "multies" ) , but as she's a bit small and love all things pink it's probably going to be a P@H visit and one of those 17ltr plastic nemo or little mermaid things with the cartoon backgroung, garish gravel and bright ornament.
Please help as I seriously don't have a clue where to start....

guppies, endlers, W.C.M.M ?

Any suggestions and advice greatly appreciated.... :good:

Cheers, Sean

Try to steer her away from those cheapo plastic tanks. Get her a 10 gallon, they aint massive but will be a lot better for her fish. Look into getting some pink gravel & ornaments. Then I would go with Guppies or Endlers as both are very colourful & active.

Avoid Danios at all cost, even if the LFS says they are ideal for a small tank.

When my young cousin was looking to get some fish, I convinced his parents to buy him a standard 2x1x1 clearseal tank and condensation tray, (cost around £25)
instead of the tacky marina pink/blue 14 litre tanks that cost almost an extra £10.

then with the £10 they saved they could by flourescant gravel and corny ornaments :good:

Endlers would also get my vote, or maybe a betta with a few rasboras or similar

Cheers folks, I'll speak to her mum and see what she wants, be cool if she said they were wanting something to go in the lounge :hey:

Cheers, Sean

I would suggest a 10 gallon with pink and black gravel. Then have them consider a betta or a very small school of shoaling fish. A betta would enable her to pick an extremely colorful (yet very hardy) fish that would enable her to learn about fish while enjoying the wonderful colors. If she wants to go with schooling fish, have a look through the 10 gallon thread in the Beginners' Resource thread. It will give a bunch of options. Microrasboras would be a colorful option.
