Hello all!

I've finally come to something like a decision over what to stock in my 60L tank. According to my calculations and some googling, my tank can take approximately 33.something centimetres of fish.

I've decided I would like to stock one male betta, 6 neon tetra and 3 panda cories.

I've done some research and have come up with conflicting facts on numerous issues surrounding my tank.

Firstly, some sites say neons are fine with bettas, while others say no.

Technically, my current stocking plan means I'm ever so slightly overstocked. The best way of reducing this would be to lose a neon or two, but I've read they like to be in groups of at least 6. Since they're small fish with a relatively small bioload, is it better to keep 6 to keep them happy?

I'd also ideally like some shrimp and/or snails. I've read that since they contribute to the filtering and cleaning of the tank, you don't need to include them in capacity calculations. Is this true/wise?

Sorry if it seems like I'm asking alot of questions. I know mistakes are all part of the learning process but I'd like to get as much right as possible from the beginning. :)

+1...i also would like to know the answers to this. as i am trying to find out what to put in my 60L and 70L

Most tetras can be nippy; even neons, if they're not in a large enough shoals, that's why advice regarding keeping them with bettas is so confilcting, but yes, you'd be better off having at least six.

Cories also do better in larger shoals, so I'd be inclined to swap them for a few more neons and some shrimps. You don't need to count the shrimp, not because of the 'cleaning' (no aquarium inhabitants clean more mess then they make), but they produce so little waste, you can more or less discount them.

Snails can be quite messy, but are a good indicator; if you have explsions in the snail population it's sign that you're overfeeding. Nerite snails won't breed in freshwater, so would stay under control.

I'd ideally like some kind of bottom feeder. If I didn't have the panda cories, is there another type of cory or bottom feeder that would do well on it's own or in a smaller group?

My LFS has some assassin snails I quite like the look of. Apparently they're good at eating other snails, and they're quite tiny at the moment.

Dwarf cories could work, that way you could have 10 or so :)

If you go for the smaller Green Neon you could have 10 of them too IMO
