I have a 40 gal tank. I originally had a Betta Splenden (Princess Bubbles...I let my wife name him and she refused to admit that he was a boy since he's pink), but recently removed him. I tried to be careful about my stocking, but he got nipped at. I put him into a containment area for awhile and now that he's healthy again (thankfully!) I have moved him into his own tank so he won't get nipped at. I never did discover who the nipper was but I suspect it was my platy's.

Anyways, my question is based on this configuration, what am I able to stock? Should I stick with livebearers, or can I look at Gouramis / Angel Fish now that the Betta is gone? What about Tetras?

2x Male Sailfin Molly
2x Male Hawaiian Platty
1x Male Swordtail
5x Zebra Daino

Appreciate the responses.

What does your pH run in general? I'm guessing around 7'ish since you have so many livebearers. If you get an Angel, just don't stock anything small like Neon Tetras. I had an Angel that was fine at first, but once it grew full size my Neons became dinner for it.

Around 7-7.5

Would my Dainos be okay with the Angel once it grows? Bigger than Tetra, but still small.

So below is my configuration with the value I am giving each fish based on their adult size or size I intend to remove them at. I was told about 1 inch per gallon is what I should look at as a rule for stocking so I have been trying to use that as my guide with thinner fish getting less value. I don't know if my guestimates are accurate or not.

My tank is about 40 gal (3ft x 1ft x just under 2ft)

5x Zebra Danios (5 points)
2x Sailfin Molly (10 points)
2x Hawiian Platty (5 points)
1x Swordtail (2 points)
1x Dwarf Gourami (2 points)
1x Angel (6 points)
1x Pleco (10 points)

First off let me say that I know the pleco will grow way beyond this tank, which is why I plan to move him out at around 10 inches. He is less than 2 currently so just a little guy. I know a lot of people get upset on here about having pleco's in 40 gal tanks so I would prefer it didn't get derailed by that. I am aware of the facts and have no interest in harming him. He's my favorite fish.

All-in-all that accounts to 38 points which should mean that my tank is full-up. Is that assessment about right? I would love to toss another small group of danios in there (not that my current ones ever school up as it is) but am thinking that I simply don't have the capacity.

I'm starting to really dig the look of my tank so thought I would post a pic to see what others thought. All fake plants for now while I learn more about them and what I need to do to support them.
