Stocking Ideas

I would do:

6 neons -6"
1 sunburst platy -2"
3 panda corys -7.5"
3 zebra danios -6"

That puts you at 21.5 which isn't the end of the world. Just keep in mind that if you're inch/gallon is off by a small amount like 1.5" the tank isn't going to spontaneously combust...

are there any corys that are a lil more colorful

We have a trio of peppered corys and although they are darker than pandas when the light hits them the right way they are a cool metallic turquoise color

Sorry forgot to add a link there for you :)

and here's a pic of one of our peppered, the largest one is about 1.25 inches right now. Sorry they aren't the best quality but you can kind of see the metallic coloring.

I saw a tank of Corydoras adolfoi a while back. Quite beautiful but they were fairly expensive.

very beautefull but at my lfs they were about £14 each i had 5 and eventually they all died :( there was nothing wrong in my tank i reckon they just were specific about water conditions

Don't get me started on the 1"/gal thing!

I warned you not to get me started...

There's been dozens of conversations around here on the subject. Personally, I think it's rubbish. It applies in some cases but can be very misleading in others . There so many examples it's hard top know where to start. (Is an 8" oscar in a 10 gal tank OK? Is 25 neons in a 20 gal tank overstocked?) This "rule" leaves out questions of compatability and terrirory and IMO it causes more problems than it solves. It really doesn't apply to cichlids at all. Those who are somewhat educated in the hobby realize the limits of this "rule", but complete newbies latch on to it as gospel and it creates trouble because they aren't aware that the "rule" has many situations where it just doesn't work. We've all seen many examples of this. Some like to call it a guideline instead but I don't go for that either.

If something is wrong more than it's right I call that a myth or a fallacy, not a rule or a guideline.

I applogize for the hijack but hey, I did warn you. ;)

I used the cal tool you posted in another topic and it said I could put 34" of fish in a 20 gal tank.........

Can you find where I posted this? If I made any reference to it I'm quite sure it was to warn people against using it.

thanks for the explanation I am one of those newbies and I wasn't refering to you it was to SAMUK's post and he cleared it up already, I used the ulitamte cal tool and it seemed a little off to me but thanks to both of you for your advice.

I would love a blue ram but 2 things hold me back 1. I have NO IDEA where to get one around here, 2. I don't know how much they cost

No one ever got back to me about the Dwarf Gourami idea, I did pick up a couple of danios last night and 2 more tetras

I picked up a golden Gourami and Bristle nose pleco that just about rounds out the tank I think

I added 1 Dwarf Gourami , I Golden Gourami and a bistle nose plec

everything is doing great and I think it's fine the way it is thanks for all the advice
