For my 20 gallon (BW) I am thinking of 1 Figure Eight Puffer and 5 Bumblebee Gobies. Is this a good combination? The filtration will probably be an Eheim Aquaball 2212 Internal (650L/hour) this gives me about 9x turnover.

Cheers

How often should you feed snails to Figure 8 puffers?

Ive heard that a lot of people keep figure eights with gobies, but I wouldnt if i were you. I kept mine with 2 knight gobies, and a tun of really agressive atlantic gobies that i collected myself. Bumble gobies are some of the least aggresive gobies and thus would not work.(i have one in a desktop tank i modified for use with dwarf puffers) My puffer fliped out after a year and a half of smooth sailing and almost killed all my gobies. My 2 knight gobies sat on their side and did not move for a week. They were severly injured, some of thier fins did not grow back. You have to remember that puffers arent all that agressive, they just have a nasty mouth. They have bite plates that are desigghned to smash open hard shells. When a pffer bites a fish it severs blood flow to a large chunk of flesh and thus the chunk of flesh rotts off. If this does not kill the fish it will me maimed for life. It is far better to keep puffers alone. You cant even keep multiple puffers together. Also i am very found of my pet freshwater moray eels. Puffers and eels dont work. I ve never tried it but after what my puffer did to my 8 inch bichir, i can only imagine the horrific damage done to eels that are kept with puffers. Please do me a favor and dont mix puffers and eels. Eels dont deserve to get eaten alive. The only Goby like fish you should try would be a jade sleeper. Sleepers used to be in the same family as gobies. Only real difference is the lack of fused pelvic fins(no suction cup).

I was hoping to keep a Figure 8 Puffer with about 5 bumblebees???

ya dwarf puffers are very agrresive, + if it was a fig 8 and was a desktop aquarium there probably wasnt enouph room, i would make it 1 fig 8 and 3-4 bbg,as for snails i think a few times a week should be fine

Here are the tanks specs....

Dimensions

L= 77.5cm (30.5") W= 31.5cm (12.4") H= 39.5cm (15.6")

Volume:

20 U.S Gallons (75 liters)

Filtration:

1x Eheim Aquaball 2210 (550L/h) +
1x Fluval 1 Plus (200L/h)

= 750L/h (10x turnover)

Hope this helps :good:

I am not sure why you are gettng such hysterical replys

Figure 8 puffers almost always make good tank mates with bumble bee gobies. While its possible that you get a demented F8 and he attacks everyting in the tank its not likely.

In a 20 gallon, i would go with 1 F8 puffer and a dozen bumblee bee gobies. The Gobies dont need a lot of room, and their territoral squabbles are whats fun about keeping them. In my experience, they dont all need a real "cave". what they do is carve out a territory, it maybe be a rock, leave or side of the tank and then defend it. So make sure there is a lot of "stuff" in the tank.

Feeding is the hardest part. Nothing dried, no flake, etc

thats way toooo many gobies,3 to 5 is fine

No its not. If you dont want that many, its fine but you can certainly have a dozen or more in a 20 gallon tank.

They have a very small bio-load and defend tiny territories. As long as you make sure they all feed there shouldnt not be a problem.

not only does that break the thumb rule by itself 20 bbg in a 20gal with a tetradon biocellatus

First, the thumb rule was invented so newbie fish keepers would put 25 gouramis in a 10 gallon tank

Going by the thumb rule it would be ok to put a foot long pleco in a 35 gallon hexagon tank!

Its a silly guideline and does not apply here.

Second, what i said is that you could put one F8 puffer and a dozen bumble bee gobies in a 20 gallon tank. I stand by this. The waste produced by the gobies in negligible so that would be a problem assuming any sort of decent filtration.

Second, they dont need large territories. I had BBG that staked out one Java Fern leaf! Assumung there are rocks, plants and other items in the tank, a dozen would be fine.

Third, while a F8 would be better off in a larger tank, it will be fine in a 20 assuming the filtration is adequate and the water quality is good.

I think i will jus have 5 BBG & 1 F8. The turnover will be at least 7.5x

12 BBG's is a silly amount, there will be no space for teritories what so ever. 6 at the very most

I am planning on keeping 1 F8, then maybe adding a couple of BBG later on.
