My 36 gallon is coming hopefully in February, and this is my initial stocking plan. I am planning to start fowlr, then go reef later on. How does this sound?
2 black ocellaris clowns
1 flame angel
1 clown goby
The goby isn't a priority, but is a hope. This is my first saltwater, so I know nothing about this. Is the angel going to be OK? I have heard bad stuff about them.

Looks like good stocking to me. What have you heard about the angel?
The only real trouble with them is their potential to nip on your coral polyps.

If you go with this you should probably add the goby first, since it's the most peaceful. It should get the chance to settle in without being harassed by the other fish.

And yeah, the only real issue with angels is they might nip the corals.

Ok, I may have to go with a 30 gallon instead. Will these fish still be ok for life, or should I skip the goby, or another fish?

Ok good...are there any corals that the angel expecially loves to nip? I am planning to get corals a while after the tank is started, but a $75 coral nipped to death probably wouldn't be good.

Usually more fleshy corals, so soft corals for the most part, but I wouldn't be surprised if they went after hard corals too.

Ok, the more and more research and reading I do on the flame angels, the less and less I am beginning to like them. Can you recommend any small, attractive, reef safe fish that could live in this tank? Preferably one that will swim, and be active, and has at least some degree of red or orange?

Flame cardinal or firefish come to mind. Kinda hover rather than swim, but both are generally always out in the open.

Scarlet hawkfish - although they don't really swim, they sort of bounce round the tank  I love em

I have decided on the flame cardinal, mostly for the safety of my inverts, and beauty. Is there anything that I should watch out for with this fish?

Nope, they are absolutely wonderful fish. Unfortunately most people just walk right past them.
