Ok so i wont be sorting this out this side of crimbo but i like the planning anyway! so far i have the idea for the aquascape a ruined rome kinda think with busts of roman leaders mossy floor couple of background plants and other bits :)

Then i come 2 the fishy bit, im strugglin on what to have tbh i heard that a 50g is good for about 4 discus.
other fish i was looking at:
clown loachs
rams
silver dollar
guppys

ok after reading up a little bit, well i havbeenreading for over an hour on and off  i have come with this
4 discus 4x7inch = 28
2 Clowns 2 x 11inch = 22
1male 3 female rams 4x3inch = 12
total = 62 inch
i currently have guppys in another tank and it looks ike i will be keeping them there after my reading

what do you tink? will he tank be over crowded or will any of the speices be problamatic to
the others?
Thanks alot in advance
Greg

also the rule for 1inch of fish to one gallon. is that a uk gallon or a us gallon?
Greg

us gal.
at least, thats what we use in the USA, could be different.
i like the idea of rams, they are very colourful, and once they get setteled in, they are less seclusive!!!!
im not a huge fan of guppy's they are too....... foofoo..... for me.
nice word huh

discus are too much work for me, though highschool takes a lot of time away from me.

that is my opinion if you want it! :hyper:
lol....
.....stupid smilies......

lol

The reading i did suggests that discus arent as much work as people think they are, mainly due to the newre technology we have now meaning that water quality is alot better, Anyone else got any comments they would like to make :)
Cheers

i have a 3ft jewel 180 tank with the theme you want and it looks cool. Why don't you go for:

3 angelfish
pair of gouramis
3 rams
5 rummynoses/rainbows
5 cories

thats what i would have.dunno if its over stocked.

ih and discus are bet in groups of 5+ and if you did get fish to go in with them i could only suggest some sort of small tetra or rasbora.

ye what about cories or plecos
plecos are nice big fish and they also clen the algea
cories are active and clean all the gravel so both are good

I'd leave the clowns and the rams out. If 50g is right for 4 discus, give them that extra 5 gallons to play with, or if discus are better in groups of 5, get one more. But I would ask discus folks here if that's ok first as I've not had them so am purely thinking hypothetically. But if you need 50g for 4 discus, the remaining 5g isn't enough for 4 rams and 2 clown loaches.

I personally have not kept discus but I believe a bigger tank is needed for 4 of them...

No to the clown loaches they grow to 12" and need to be in groups of 3-4 at least and Rams are very sensitive to water specs and aren't a good choice for discus

Ok cool, thanks for the input u guys :)
Im thinking like you said maybe the the discus are out then at least till the tank matures i think new tanks are preety bad for them i heard leave it like three months. things have changed a little over christmas aswell didnt put it in the bump cause i wanted to know what you guys thought of my inital idea but....

"Rams are very sensitive to water specs"

whoops i did read about them and three of them are currently in my smaller 15g tank with my guppies and fry all is well and the whole tank is awaiting the 55g being up and running.

"No to the clown loaches they grow to 12" and need to be in groups of 3-4 at least"

ok clowns are out. but in my reading it said they have been reported to 12" but are usally smaller so a 12" fish would not be ok in a 4ft tank?( i understand that might come across as taking the p@#$ please dont take it that way it is an honest question :) )

so far i have
3 rams
2 adult guppies and 7 fry

my questions are......

what pleco would grow to the appropraite size for my tank?
what are the most personable (as in most personality) corrys?
what are the most inteligent fish i could have in this setup?

Thanks all in advance

it's not the size of the clowns really that would stop you beign able to keep them in that size tank, if they were happy being kept just in pairs or alone it would be fine. however they like to be kept in big groups, and a big group of big fish means a massive tank! ideally you need at least 100usg to keep clowns properly.

there's loads of options for plecs, just look for something that gets to around 8" max and is fine alone. best bet is to ask in the plec forum for recommendations.

i don't think there's much in it with cories.... just go for whatever you like the look of best but make sure you get a group of at least 6, the bigger the group the more active and fun they will be :)

hmmm define what you want from an intelligent fish? you want something that's gonna interact with you loads?

yea kinda like a puffer that was my inital plan for my other tank but the powers that be ( the missus) condemmed my old tank so its going to be a hospital/quarrentine kinda thing ( good thing really) i cant think of a fish that would be interative as such to go into this tank. :) cheers miss wiggle

yeah most things like that need they're own tanks, can be a bit of a bugger. not sure of anything off the top of my head but i'll have a think and try and post back with some suggestions! :)
