Stocking Advice

Hi all, as im very nearly cycled looking at what fish i can have now. I have a fluval 125 ltr tank, sand substrate,tetratec ex700 filter, and quite a few plants in there now, and a decent size bit of bogwood.I really like the black phantom tetra and julii cory, thinking of 10 tetra, 6 cory, 2 honey gourami, 2 bolivian ram, found a shop not far from me had the ram thought they looked great, 10 amano shrimp {cherry shrimp dont seem to be an option if i go with rams} and 3 assassin snails. According to ##143### they all seem to go together, and it says this is about 89% stocking for me. Looks like i got some room left any suggestions for this, or is that about it on stocking, also any comments on stocking welcome. Thanks Mick

Hi Mickfender,

I'm guessing you a performing a fishless cycle? Can I ask what level of ammonia you are dosing upto? if you are dosing upto 4-5ppm then you should be fine to pretty much fully stock the tank in one go as the level of benefical bacteria would be substantial enough to cope with the amount of ammonia produced by your fish.

Your stocking suggestion seems a really good one, your right about bolivian rams been great fish, I have a pair in my 125L along with a trio of apisto cacatuoides double red.

Looking at your stocking you'd probably get a little more in the tank but I'd personally stock with what you have listed above for now then if everything goes alright then in say 3-6 months time then maybe have a look at slightly increasing the stocking.

Dont forget to keep adding ammonia once the cycle is completed up until the day before you add fish and dont forget the large 95% water change at the end to get rid of the large amount of nitrates that will have built up.

Hi andy, thanks for reply. Yes im doing a fishless cycle, started 8 weeks yesterday, and topping ammonia to 4/5 ppm. Still a bit of nitrite at 12 hr test , ammonia clearing in 12 hrs for days now , so not in final week yet but soon i hope. Thanks Mick

The stocking sounds great, you could probs go to 10 cories IMO
