Hi
I am new to this forum. I have a 100 gallon freshwater community tank, a 40 gallon breeder, and a 20 galloon all fresh water community. Also a 10 gallon quarantine tank.
Amonia 0 nitrites 0 nitrates 15 pH 8.2 about 73 degrees steady
I have a bunch of fish in my 100 gallon tank that I have inherited. It was/is my friends tank. I live with her and her family, but she has said she doesn't want to deal with it and I can do what I like. This is what I would like to do...how far overstocked am I?
3-Dojo Loach (I have these)
1-Pictus Catfish (I have this one he is 6")
4-6-Angelicus Botia (I only have one of these)
1-Rainbow Shark (I have him he is 6")
12- Neon Tetra (I have only 2)
12- Zebra Danio/Glo-fish (I have 6 natural zebras)
1- Pink Gourami (I have 2 but one is much smaller and is being picked on so one must go back to LFS)
1- Blue Gourami (I have him also)

I want to accomidate as many fish that I already have as I can and try to keep the kids favorites but I also want the fish to thrive not just survive.
How overstocked will I be?
thanks

it is 100 gallon US it is 72"x16"x22". So I would be good with this arrangement? Maybe I could add to the danios or another school of tetras? thanks

As a very basic guide to stocking I would start with the inch per gallon method and then go from there

3-Dojo Loach 15"
1-Pictus Catfish 6"
4-6-Angelicus Botia 16" - 24"
1-Rainbow Shark 6"
12- Neon Tetra 12"
12- Zebra Danio/Glo-fish 24"
1- Pink Gourami 6"
1- Blue Gourami 6"

Total - 91" - 99"

Note: depending on your maintenance and filtration on the tank this can be moved to 1.5inches per Gallon or even 2inches per Gallon,

yup agree with above, the stocking you give is almost dead on 1" per gallon which is the usual guide we give, you can bump this up to 1.5/2" per gallon if you have good filtration so you have room for probably half as many fish again quite easily. :good:

But the 1" per gallon rule is a myth. You can't put a 10 in oscan in a 10 gallon tank. I know that some fish just need more space than 1" per gallon.

It is a guideline that works fine with community species like you have,
however with large, aggressive or specialist fish it is indeed not a valid method to use
