I have a 30 gallon tank that I want to set up for south american fish. What do you think of this list:

3 angles
2 rams
10 neons or cardinal tetras
5 corydoras
4 hatchet fish

The tank will have floating and planted real plants.

Better to find a matched pair of angels, 2's company, 3's a crowd for them. Watch the fish before you buy them for a half hour, just try not to look weird in the store.

Seriously, you will see which ones are consistantly staying near eachother, take home those two.

As far as tetras, corys and hatchets? Seems fine for a SA tank setup.

2 rams? Maybe, they might chomp the tetras though.

Neons will most likely end up as expensive feeders to the angels, I don't know about cardinals, but I'm guessing them too.... How tall is your tank though? You need it to be at least 18 inches tall to keep angels.

Here's what i would do...

Get 2 angels, instead of 3

Don't get the rams... get some other pair of fish that isn't a cichlid. Maybe honey or dwarf gouramies.

Get 10 cardinals, instead of neons as they would become lunch to the angels.

And then go for the 4 hatchetfish and five cories.

Anyways, have fun with your new tank! :fun:

 That tank would look really cool and active, I think I'd go with that too! :p

Gouramis are Asian not South American so this would not be in keeping of their planned biotope tank.

Rams or Appistogramma are usually fine with angels as they occupy different levels of the tank.

The only problem i can see is that a 30g doesnt really have the height needed for regular scalare angel fish, depending on the parameters of your tapwater if it is soft and has a pH under 7 i would try to get some altum angels which have shorter dorsal/anal finnage and will be more at home in a shallower tank.

Ok great. Yah, the tank is tall enough. I have had angelfish in it before it was taken down (changed substrate- Now I will go with the black chipped gravel I have stored).

You may find the hatchets get bullied by the angels so keep this in mind as well. It's usualy best to keep hatchets in larger groups.
