Here is what I'm thinking of for my 18 gallon tank once it is finished cycling (hopefully just a week or 2 more) :S

5 Bloodfin Tetras
4 Zebra Danios
1 CAE (I know a CAE will outgrow an 18 gallon tank, I am going to buy another bigger tank, hopefully 50-75 gallons after the New Year)
When the CAE moves to the bigger tank I'd like to replace him with 2 or 3 panda corys.

Oh and a few snails.

Open to other opinions!

how about just dont get the CAE at all, unless you really find them good looking.....

Chinese Algae Eaters can get very aggressive. They need a diet of mainly fish when they get to be mature size, so he is going to want to go hunting! You may want to try Oto's instead. They stay smaller and are loads of fun!

I hear that they have   a high mortality rate? So, other than the criticism against the CAE, which I anticipated, is that an OK stock for an 18 gallon tank? To answer you, Musho, yes, I am very fond of CAE's and how they look. I want to raise one up nice and old and as cranky as he wants to be. :hey:

Hmm... never really heard of that... Other then that, the list seems fine.

Sounds like a good idea to me, provided you are able to offer the CAE alternative accommodation as he grows bigger. It's quite an attractive thought to actually look after one of these fish for its own sake, they get such a bad press. In fact, you could probably do a good deed by adopting an unwanted CAE, the world is full of them. When you get round to the panda corys, don't get just two- they are schooling fish and you will enjoy them much more that way. Again, a bigger group of danios is better, to spread aggression- or if it is a 2 foot tank, you might want to think about a less hyper species.

It is true, the methods of catching otos are mainly cyanide since they are very hard to catch, they arent hardy, and they eat a lot and if they wont accept prepared foods they may starve. Ive had 3 otos, one died on the first day, probably cyanide poisoning, second die 3 weeks later from starvation, no more algae left, third died at 5 weeks. 20 gallon tank, from my experiance, otos are the worst fish for small tanks.
