Stock Conflicts?

Hi there,

I have now hopefully completed stocking my tank and was hoping if I could get comments if I have over stocked my tank or if the following fish don't belong with each other. There doesn't seem to be any conflicts thus far, everyone seems to be getting along just fine. I currently have a 30 Gallon but plan on upgrading to a 55 or 70 Gallon tank in a years time. All of my fish are small and do not exceed 1.25" in length.

Suggestions and tips are welcome!

- 4 Longfinned Danios
- 3 Tiger Barbs
- 1 Dwarf Gourami
- 1 Red Tail Shark
- 2 Angel Fish
- 2 Turquoise Rainbow Fish
- 3 Panda Corydoras
- 2 Pepper Corydoras
- 2 Cherry Barbs

first the tiger barbs and the red tail shark. The shark won't like any fish that looks like him; that had a red tail for instance, which the tiger batbs do; the barbs could also be nippy to the other fish (the long fin danios and the angel fish in particular) as there are not enough of them.

The danios can get equally nippy towards each other if not in a large enough shoal too.

Currently edited my original post. I have a 30 gallon tank. My Danios and Tiger Barbs seem pretty peaceful, I've had both together in my tank for the past month, my shark was added two weeks ago. The Danios usually stick to the top 3 inches of the tank and the Tiger Barbs to the middle.

Would adding more of a certain fish be beneficial for my tank?

They usually are peaceful to start with; it's as they reach maturity and start thinking about mating/territories that things kick off!
I would add more tigers and more danios; six of each preferably.

What are the measurements of your tank?

A red tailed shark shouldn't be in anything less than a four foot,IMO, and angels can grow to be a foot from top to bottom and so need a tank that is 18" deep, at least

In my eyes, the danios don't belong on several counts...

• Their temperature needs are lower than everything else. For most of the year they ought to be at a cool temp of <20C, with a "summer season" <24C, to prevent their lifespan being drastically reduced by a raised metabolic rate.
• They thrive in setups with a good current (6-10x tank volume per hour), while the others would not be too comfortable in such conditions.
• They are very active fish, despite staying small, who deserve to be kept in 4-foot or longer tanks.
• Might never happen, but being a long finned variety, I bet your small group of Tiger Barbs are drooling at the thought of nipping them at some point.

The Tiger Barbs are less liely to become terrors if kept in a good sized group of ~10+, as they will become pre-occupied with their position in the group's hierachy.

The rainbows/corydoras/Cherry Barbs are all social fish that will benefit from groups of at least six, but even better if you can house more.

Lake Katubu rainbows can sometimes get a bit boisterous, so a good sized group with at least two females per male will help keep the larking about in-house. Long term, these active fish would do so much better in a 5-foot or longer tank, but 4-foot is considered an absolute minimum.


The Red Tail Black Shark could be a pussy cat, but could also become a very spiteful fish, that will terrorise your other fish that keep to the tank floor. Bit risky, especially for the catfish.

My measurements are 31"x13"x19"(deep). Would adding more fish begin to overstock my tank? I posted a list in my original post. Again, all are small and will be placed into a much larger tank (55 or 70g) in a year.

You would be overstocked if you added the extra shoalers yes, but with adequate water changes you'd be ok and upping the numbers of the shoalers is well worth the risk, IMO as your tank will be better balanced and less likely to cause you problems.
