I have one betta and one apple snail in a 2.5g tank, I change the water once a week pretty much. And the smell of the water is almost enough to make you puke  . What can I do, if anything, to keep that water from smelling so bad? Is it normal for it to smell as bad as it does, when I get a bigger tank is it going to smell (I plan on buying either 2 10g tanks or one 20g w/a divider in it and putting a filter in there). Thanks!

the smell is do with the waste that the apple snail is producing they are just poop machines and foul up the water very quickly if its not filtered or the tank size isnt big enough, 2.5g is too small for the amount of waste that your betta and apple snail are producing, getting the larger tank will help the situation, you didnt mention if it was filtered or not? but im gunna presume it isnt so forgive me if im wrong lol, filtered water even with a slight flow is better than nothing when you have the apple snail in there.

Its not filtered. The last time I had a betta, I got it from my ex bf when he was moving and didn't want it so I took it in and put a filter in it, the fish didn't last long after that. So I decided to wait on the filter until I get the bigger tank so the fish is not having to deal with the flow from the filter in such close quarters. Thanks for the information!

Sounds like you are going to have to change the water more frequently, also you don't say how much you change ?

Either way more frequent changes are required.

I change the water completely, once a week, every Sunday.

If you actually filtered the water it would solve a lot of your problems and provid a far better home for the fish.

Try doing 50% changes every 3-4 days. I agree with modaz...apple snails are poop machines...And unless you are meticulous with cleaning and water changes in an unfiltered tank they will wreak havoc. ( Thus why my apple snail is aptly named Stinky.... ) Little bugger nearly drove me up a wall when I first got him.
