So my betta is fighting columnaris/fungus today i stocked up on my medications and I'm looking for advice on a combination or a single med to help kick this. I am currently using Maracyn and Maracyn 2 to no avail. Here is my med list

Rid Ick
Coppersafe
Melafix
Tetracycline
Fungus Eliminator
Bettazing (from Bettatalk.com)
Maracyn
Maracyn 2

any help would be great. He is still getting all this white cloudy stuff on the top of his water two days after a water change, and he occasionally gets the white string on him, but not all the time

Post in the emergency section and wait for Wilder. Good luck.

When my female betta went through a bacterial infection, the Maracyn didn't help her until I'd passed the first 5 days of dosage and started the allowed second 5 days. Somewhere around day 8, she just improved immensely. I also fed her a very high protein diet, lots of live worms and brine shrimp, very few flakes and pellets. She was in the 10 gallon hospital tank, around 80 degrees, slow movement filter. I did a complete water change after 5 days, then another after the next 5 days.

What size tank are you using?

wheres that?

If you have access to a 10 gallon, I found it much easier to dose the maracyn and maracyn 2 correctly in the 10 gallon. Sometimes it just takes patience. But I truly believe between the meds and the high protein, it's the only reason Violet made it. She was at death's door when we started.

Go to the top of the page. Click on > Tropical Fish>. Then find the forum titled "Tropical Fish Emergencies"

The most important thing in treating sick fish is a correct diagnosis. I am not sure that your diagnosis is complete. Continue with the present treatment until it is done or Wilder tells you tp change it.

For instance if there is also a fungal infection you would also need to add Maroxy to the treatment. If there is a secondary infection of ich or some other parasite, you would add CopperSafe. Mardel is an excellent choice because their meds can safely be mixed.

Glad the little guy is still hanging on. Good luck.

Whatever happens, you are learning how to recognize desease and treat it. Hang in there yourself and do the best you can. Your future fish will thank you with good health and long life.

Potassium Permanganate (PP) can also be used to deal with fungal problems in fish.

PP comes in the form of purple crystals or liquid concentrations and can be purchased from most pharmacies. It is usually used for treatment of infected skin conditions (e.g. foot rot) in humans.

To use it as a bath for your fish, do ensure that it is properly diluted till the water is very light purple before putting your fish in for a quick dip (i.e. a short swim) because you just want to kill the fungus and not to kill the fish.

After treatment, the fish should return to a clean tank of water.

One should also avoid treating fish with PP more than once a week.

The following is an article about the use of PP in the control of external infections in ornamental fish.

A bit off topic, D. Chia: Isn't PP also used to treat new plants before they are introduced to the aquarium in order to eliminate any desease they may be carrying?

Of course, in this case his Betta does most likely have columnaris and not just a fungus.
