So, I am starting a little community tank and I have a few fish I have in mind, but I am very new to this whole scene (First tank) and I don't want to be over complicated by high maintenance fish.

I am about to get a 60L tank and I am just wondering what sort of substrate I should get and what tank mates I could get with these: Red Phantom Tetras. Possibly celestial Pearl Danio's.

I want a lightly planted tank and sand. Does this sound good to anyone?

Edit: I have hard london water :)

That will work. Need more info on what other fish you are considering. Also water parameters, pH,hardness, temp and filtration...

Red Phantoms will get along fine with Black Phantoms, I know that. Also Dwarf Gourami and Amano Shrimp will be peaceful with them I think. As you have sand and sounds like some open space, perhaps a small group of corys?

All I have that is actually concrete is: A 60L tank and I defo want Red Phantoms and Sand. I haven't actually bought anything yet. I have a 60L tank ready to buy but thats about it.

I am almost certain my water is okay for phantoms.

Ahh maybe I might throw in 6 Blacks with my red. I don't think I will bother with shrimp. I do want a breeding pair of something preferably, so maybe gouramis are the way to go. I have seen a few other fish I like: Scarlet Badis, Asain Rummy Nose, Chili Rasbora, Possibly Ember Tetra's if I can't get Red Phantom's. They are all kind of similar colour which isn't good for me. I want some diversity too the tank, I know with a 60L it will be hard to get many typed of fish as there won't be a massive amount of space. Which is why I want to keep everything in their light, don't want the substrate to fill up my whole tank.

P.S. Not too keen on the look of Gourami's, but at the moment I am very open minded. P.S.S. I want something to clean my tank up nice (Algi Eaters Etc.) But I HATE the look of catfish. Maybe one or two will be okay...

Also, I want some plants and I have 0 preference for plants, as I don't know any. So just recommend some plants and I will look them up. Don't want floating ones :)

That will depend on the level of lighting you have. Is it T8, T5 or LED? How many wpg?

Have you read about how to cycle the tank before putting fish in? It takes 4 to 8 weeks.

Yeah, all that stuff is okay, I know all about that stuff, and I have my cousin to help me. I just wanted to know about fish and plants really, what you guys would recommend for me.

I love black phantoms, reds a close second. Personally, I think you're fairly limited on space so get 7 or 9 phantoms and then 6 or so Cory's for the bottom. One of the smaller species - they will love the sand.

Some nice bogwood, a cave or two and some plants.

Nice, simple but attractive...

Cheers

That sounds pretty good, I haven't really seen Cory's that I would go for yet. But I think this might be good. I do want a pair of fish that are bigger than corys and tetras. Yeah, space is an issue, but I am willing to stretch a little over the recommended.

What about these: Scarlet Badis, Celestial Pearl Danio's, (mosquito rasbora) Chili Rasboras?
