I have no proof of this myself, however it has been proven when discus breed prematurely (probably under 6') they put all their energy into it and not for their own growth which can stunt them, added onto that most discus you buy at shops are stunted anyway, which makes them infertile :(

thanks for that because i was going to buy some, think i will go for a decent breeder and young ones.
 
4-5 inch pairs are fine. Younger pairs. That is breeding age. Take a ruler out and meausre 4-5 inches. Its a good length.
 
discus can mature and breed early but because they put all their energy into breeding, their growth temporary slows down and long term they will probably not grow to their maximum size. I supose it depends what you want from your fish, a young pair can still make good parents.
