Thanks guys. was looking at a tall 50gal so im guessing thats out then!! Is 5 discus the minimum you could keep together then? Could i keep 4 with some smaller fish?

If I wanted 5, how would I get them once my tank has finished cycling? Buy 5 at once from the same tank at my lfs or buy 1 each week over 5 weeks?

I have only rarely seen good quality Discus at lfs near me i would only ever buy from a breeder the difference is huge and the price is much better my lfs sells large nothing special to look at discus for £70-100, from a breeder you can get a beautiful adult specimin for £40-70. Buy them together, needs to be a mature tank though. And make sure you have researched their water conditions(v.important) if you stick to the rules they are not as difficult to keep as people think

How am I meant to find breeders? Espcially in Australia im guessing it would be hard, but where do i start lol

When I'm trying to pair of DIscus for breeding at least, I put 6 juvenilles in a 40 gallon and as soon as they pair I move them off to their own tanks. I agree that a 75 is the needed size for six adult fully grown discus, but the needed size could also vary for what purpose the fish will have. Good info though guys!

O and breeders, well type Discus Fish in ****** That would be the area you live. Type that in google and you should have a few results. I live in Maryland in the US and I found about 3 breeders within 100 miles of me!!!. ;)

The tank i was looking at is AQUIENCE 650 S 65cm X 140 H X 65 Deep which is the 50G and 55cm wide X 140 h X 55 deep , 2 T8 tubes , external filter, heater/stat 36GALLONS.

I take it i would be unable to put any discus in the 36 Gallon tank. I think I have more chance of persuading the wife to "allow" the 36G tank than the 50G one unfortuneatly!!

DO you want a breeding pair? I would put a breeding pair and some other fish in a 36 gallon myself. I have seen some really nice pairs (about 4"-5") at my LFS for about £50 but i dont know if you would be able to get any neer you. Always worth a try though
