In the early planning stages at the moment but the end goal is to convert from my current community set up to Cichlid. I run a juwel trigon 190 and have a few questions I hope you can help me with. Firstly, what type of Cichlid set up could I have in a 190 litre tank? Seen a lot of stuff where people recommend over stocking these fish and seen some pretty cramped tanks!! Secondly, what filter should I run? A fluval 305 goes upto a 300 litre tank, would this be appropriate? Finally, what substrate would be best? I am currently testin at 7.4 ph so naturally quite high.

You could only get away with the small cichlids in a tank of that size because being only 190 litre and a trigon the bottom area.. Or footprint is nowhere as much as say a vision or rio. So things like oscars, dempseys, green terrors, red devil, severums... Basically new world cichlids would be out of the question. When it comes to cichlids the more filtration the better as they tend to be messy, as in produce a lot of waste. If you want cichlids then I'd say go with a Malawi setup as these tend to be much smaller in size. I have no experience with them though maybe someone else could help you with them

Oh yeah, as for substrate i only use sand in all my tanks. I have normal kids playsand in 3 of them and Limpopo black sand in my main tank. From what iv heard by many, using sand gives you a wider choice of fish to keep

Post the same question in the old world section, I think those are the type of cichlids you are asking about.

there are plenty of new world cichlids that will live in that tank. rainbows, bolivian rams, apistos, gbr's, firemouth, elliotti, aureus, flier, convict, honduran red point etc etc just to name a few. dont think all new world cichlids get huge because they dont but obviously the ones that do wont be suitable.

black background, sand, redmoor wood, a few hardy low light plants, a nice group of rainbows or bolivian rams, a couple of smaller plecs and a group of tetra would look awesome in that size tank :good:

I'd like an elliotti but they are next do impossible to get hold of :( tbh I forgot about convicts. Rams are nice :) and Firemouths but can be aggressive... Mine was lol don't know enough abouth the others mentioned. Have a look around is your best bet. Find which you like then do some research on them to find out if your tank is of suitable size and what fish they are compatible with... Or you could ask on here :)

Would a pair of Blue Acara's be happy in a tank that size? Great looking fish, which i think don't get as big as Oscars, Severums and GT's Etc (?)....

Cheers
