This is my new little boy! This morning he was happily eating his shrimp and krill, so I am glad to see he was not overly stressed about getting a new home yesterday. He is such a little sweetie pie! I really want to see him fan but I will only show him his reflection once I am sure he has settled down.

Here he is, what a handsome boy! (Pic is not great, took it on my phone)

Just over 5 literes. Not sure what that is in gallons. He can pick up a hell of allot of speed in there. He was flareing like mad when I got home to let the dogs in today. Not sure why??
He had all his fins up and was really giving it. I will upgrade him to something bigger when I move. Right now I have no space. But it is a big bowl.

Oh, and what kind of Betta is Stan? I now know there are different types from reading this site. Just wondering where my wittle boy fits in?

5 litres is 1.3 gallons. That's not very big..... IMHO.

Oh, he really is a handsome boy, too..... :good:

No heater but I live in Africa. So yeah, room water temp is allot higher here. Most sites and books that I have checked on say that the bowl he is in is perfectly adequate for now. He is going to be upgraded when I move.

I am not here to get into a debate about his bowl size, I am here to make sure I learn enough for him to stay healthy and happy. I know a couple of people who have kept their bettas in much smaller bowls and they have lived for a good couple of years, yes, not ideal but Stan is in no danger until his home is upgraded.

A better pic of him

Sometimes bowl size contributes to their health and happiness. I wasn't starting a debate and am sorry you took it that way. I'm very happy for you that you have him. He's just such a pretty color and I'm sure he'll provide you with lots of love and happy times. That seems to be a betta's "job". ;)

Not to worry, I didn't think you were starting a debate. It is just that as a vetran to forums I know how things can snowball if people don't agree with each other. He is pretty small now, I know he will grow some. I realise that with a smaller bowl I have to make extra sure that his water is kept super clean, he will be getting a bigger home with some friends (of the betta friendly variety) when I move in November. Until then, he is going to be treated like royalty and I will make sure his water is kept in tip top shape.

:good:

You know, in the first picture, I thought he was actually a maroon color. Which would've been a first for me. He's still a handsome red though. Mine almost always end up having blue in them.

I thought so too, not knowing much about Bettas I was not sure, but he is the most vivid red I have ever seen in nature, the pics don't do him justice. I think he knows he is pretty too!

oh i like that second picture stansmom.......in my screen it looks like a tangerine color. beautiful.

so you say he is a baby? i am just curious what others think how old this betta really is. the reason is, is that i got 3 and one is a male. i particularly picked them super small thinking that equated to being closer to being babies or at least less than six months old. not to hijack the thread, but the male doesn't have long fins yet and i have had him for at least 5 months now. i don't think he is even a year old. will he ever grow long long fins. i can tell they are slowly growing but nothing like stansmom.

so in a nutshell, i am sure baby bettas aren't born with all that finnage......so does long long fins tell the age of a betta? and if so, how old would stan be approximately?

compared to my little blue one, Peaceful, whose pic is in my avatar, he is not even a year old but he doesn't have those long long fins yet. this picture of him was taken yesterday.

****

stansmom, where in africa are you? i would love to visit there some day.

garethusa - that looks like a female to me in your avatar. A pure guess by the fact s/he has a plump little belly and I think I can make out an ovipostor on her underside (white dot) I know that isnt the definite way of telling the sex but s/he sure looks very much a she to me!
Does it bubblenest? Or flare?
