I am looking at different budget ways to support my new 4 foot tank.

I have found small coffee tables in argos which are 22" sq and my brain began to wonder about using three of these to support it.

my logic is:

it will be 12 legs supporting the weight. each table will only be supporting about a third of the tank weight, less likely to collapse.

my concern is that its mdf ish type wood, with a plastic "beech effect" covering. not the best in the world.

the design is "chunky" so its also quite thick in the way of build.

I was thinking of buying one and getting my large pal to sit on it for a bit, see what happens.

any thoughts from others other there???

if your not using 1 table, you will need a polystyrene base. if you dont put one, you have the chance of having a seam splitting.

yeah had already thought of that one too. going to cut the tiles so that they bridge the gaps, then there is a cut to size polyurothyne (sp?) matting underneath that. have also been considering doing a bolt together throught the touching sides and an extra section of plywood to the top which would be the same size as the 3 tables.

If you are screwing the tables together it should be grand, the fact it has 12 legs will distibute the weight better. Most of my tanks just sit on household units, my 240ltr 4 foot coldwater is on a chest of drawers (also from argos) with no bother atall.

i am going one slightly better, ikea has almost the exact same tables for £7.99 each, and the edges butt right up to each other so I can do a bolt-through.

decided that 3mm plywood followed by a polystyrene tiling underneath the tank should prevent any issues with a split from movement between the tables.

the part im really liking is that the tables are also 22" square, giving a good 7 " ledge to play around with and the far end of the tables (as they will be 66" long for a 4ft tank) is to be used as a wee side table beside the couch, which the GF is happy about - killing two birds with one stone as they say.

not only that, but we also pick up a nice dresser for the bedroom, which im sure another smaller tank is going to go on.

Hi

I just went to ikea to make my stand for my new tank. I bought four single kitchen units with doors to match the laminate floor and a kitchen work top. Thats for a 167 gal.
