hi

i am looking at getting a new tank from these guys http://www.aquariummasters.co.uk/contact/contact.php

its going to be 10ft x 3ft x 2.3ft

I was trying to work out what to make the stand out of was thinking 4x2 like I used for my 5.3ft tank but these will be to wake for the 10ft was thinking about getting 10ft x 3ft x 3ft but think I would need a brick stand for that but cant have a brick one as my wife hates brick stands as she has seen my mates brick stand and hates it.

so what I am asking is could I make a wooded stand for the above tank and if i could what would i need to use ?

Mate ok here I am on my wives profile again, USE Steel frame for that size tank, use 40 x 40 mm x 2-3mm wall tickness and have legs every 600mm and cross rods every 300mm then to keep the wife happy cover the whole lot with some nice timber and dress the front and sides so that it make a nice storage cubaord for the the extras ( I know that is the one thing I hate seeing about my wifes tanks ).

A quick look at your shorter stand leads me to suggest that you use a similar style and place 4 legs along the length of the tank. With a leg at each end and a leg at 3.5 feet and at 6.5 feet your biggest span would only be about 3.5 feet in each enclosed end cabinet. I have many stands that span 4 feet with legs only on the ends. The extra legs could easily be hidden just inside the enclosed cabinet areas by making a slightly wider stile on the front panel before you make the door openings. The end result would be plenty of structural strength with nothing more than nominal 2x4 lumber (actually 1.5 x 3.5 inches). The top rail at the front and back would be one piece each sitting atop those 4 legs and you would want a cross piece between the front and back rail at each leg's location to tie things together firmly. In order to prevent "racking" of the stand, you would place a nice piece of 3/8 inch plywood or MDF across the back and both ends. For an even more rigid stand, add another piece of ply or MDF as a brace on the inner ends of the enclosed cabinets.
