a variation of cherry shrimp? snowball maybe?

Not a snowball since they are white and have white eggs. It could be a wild form cherry shrimp but hard to tell with the size pictures.
It looks somewhat similar to Australian Algea shrimp often called Darwin Algea Shrimp, but I don't know how they would of or could have got to South Africa.
I would say it is in the Caridina family of shrimp.
Did you purchase the shrimp from a shop or did you get it from one of your local water ways?

i purchased it as here in sa there is almost no biological life in our waterways

I read somewhere that it wasn't legal to buy/sell any type of shrimp in SA...did I just dream that? Hehe!
 
Anyhoo, it looks a bit like a Rocket Shrimp, but the pic's not just quite clear enough for me. Is your camera yellow or have you just added bogwood to your tank recently???
