Heartbreaking stuff. Its a shame it takes reminders like this to tell me how lucky I and my children are.

I'm with you there, it is hard to watch, but glad we have these events to remind us & put our hands in our pockets, every little helps.
We mustn't forget the poverty some children in this country suffer from too

John Bishop was a legend last night, well worth a watch on the iplayer.

If I may ask, since I'm in the us, what is this thread about?

It's charity fund raiser we do in the uk every year, you may be too young to remember band aid, but we have several charity fund raisers here to help children across the world

I missed it, definitely going to watch on iplayer.
Bish is a legend & a scouser too which makes him a double legend for me

I sponsored a friend who's running on Sunday after seeing John Bishop last night. What a legend. Really didn't think he was going to make it to the end and I certainly wouldn't blame him if he had stopped.

Oh is it like a fun run or something to help raise money? Like people sponsor you to do something? By band-aid I'm assuming your talking about those sticky things you put on cuts when they are bleeding or is that something else having to do with the fund-raiser?

No, band aid was a huge music event in the uk & us many years ago to raise money for the starving in ethiopia.
How can I explain it.... Over here we have several annual huge fund raiders, sport relief, comic relief, children in need, where everyone & anyone can come up with ideas to raise money for charity.
One such fund raiser by John Bishop, which started off this thread was to cycle from Paris, to the coast, then row the channel, then run 3 marathons to London, he's raised over 1.5 million for the charity so far

Ok i understand now. Sounds like a good cause though.

Literally cannot believe you dont know aboyt band aid. Maybe if we mentioned the words "do they know its xmas time at all" will help. Its on every xmas album ever, you must have seen the video with bono, sting, bob geldof, boy george, george michael. All the biggest acts of the 80's on one song. 1985 i think it was.

It can involve a fun run. Sport Relief runs on alternate years with Comic Relief. Sport relief encourages people to do something sporty to raise money, whereas Comic Relief is more about comedy. All the money goes to help people in third world countries and needy people in the UK. In the evening there is hours of entertainment on the TV with celebrities doing one off specials to encourage people to donate.

Another celebrity who deserves a mention is Davd Walliams who swam the length of the river Thames to raise money. It took him days and he suffered a lot of illness from swimming in the dirty water. As I've already said, John Bishop was in a terrible state and I really didint think he was gonna make it and I certainly wouldn't have blamed him for stopping. I have nothing but the greatest of admiration for the both of them.

I didn't stay up until the end last night but I heard they raised over 50 million pounds. Outstanding.

Strictly speaking the 'event' was 'Live Aid'
rolleyes.gif

Band aid was the supergroup in the UK
In the US, the song was 'We are the World'
£50 million pounds raised, well done UK

Oh I know the we are the world song it's still on tv occasionally.

Oops sorry I forgot the whole thing was called Live aid, I must've had a senior moment.
Anyways Man of fish now gets what this thread is about
