I'm all ears. I have yet to find a single scientific report that states these fish are collected in brackish water; they all seem to agree its a river-dwelling, freshwater fish. Note that I'm not arguing they should be kept in freshwater tanks; they absolutely should not!I don't totally agree with you that F8 is a true freshwater fish but this argument needs another thread![]()
Correct. In fact, according to Fishbase and the FAO, it's the juveniles found in brackish water, and the adults in freshwater. Some people use full strength (SG 1.023) saltwater to keep their full grown GSP and they look great. However, no one have ever caught a GSP in the ocean.
Depends on the skimmer, seemingly. Mine worked at SG 1.010, and there are similar reports from others. I do think a tall, powerful skimmer helps, since the less salty the water, the more difficult it is to make froth. That said, there *are* freshwater skimmers, but they're usually used on ponds.By the way, it is another myth that you could use a protein skimmer with high brackish...it doesn't work.
I'm glad it worked. I have no doubt that it can work just as you've done, adjusting your salinity once the mangroves are established. I'm just erring on the side of caution!I dropped the SG back to 1.004. I see no differences in the growth of the mangroves over the 4 months or so it took me to bring my tank to 1.009 and then back to 1.004.
