I was looking on ebay for a spawning cone for my attempt to breed discus and i come across this terracotta one that has an upturned lip all around it, i suppose to hold any wrigglers that don't stay attached to the cone.

Is that a useful feature or is it just a gimmick?

Also, terracotta or plastic? Why?

It's the first time I attempt to breed fish that spawn "vertically", so I'd like to pick the brains of more experienced users.

There is a thread called "breeding my discus" in the freshwater journals section which the poster uses breeding cones and his discus seem to love spawning on it. I think that the lip is just to keep wrigglers from falling onto the floor of the tank.
I don't have any personal experience breeding these fish but if i were to choose between a terracotta or plastic cone i would go with the terracotta, jubecause i would think eggs and wrigglers would stick to the more porous surface better.

Use Terra Cotta or Slate.

This sort of lip makes the cone more stable, i.e. harder to tip over.

This design could be meant to catch eggs/wigglers??
