my LFS has Loads of yellow labs in fresh water not brakish as they were brought in by some who breeds them in fresh water anyway,

ive been told that these yellow labs can go with my:

JD,
Severums,
Convict,
and chocolate cichlid.

i would really like to house these amazeing fish.

is this true?

They aren't compatible to mix. The Malawi's have a bad temperament and are way too quick for South American cichlids so they would be overmatched and hurt in territorial disputes.

They aren't brackish fish at all so not sure where that's coming in?

Yeah, I don't know what's up with brackish...

If you put yellow labs in that tank you are going to have one of two things, a dead lab or a fin nipped JD and a dead lab. I'm not saying it wont work, I'm just saying I wouldn't try.

oh sorry i though there were brackish, i had to take out the JD anyway as he was getting V aggressive towards all the fish.

will the labs be better with this:

1x chocolate cichlid,
2x severums,
1x female convict.

and how meny should i add?

Mixing African and american cichlids doesnt work and should be avoided. Why not set up a malawi tank

African is pretty general. If you mean the more popular Mbuna, they can't go with any Central/SA cichlids. They are too territorial and mean. When fighting they fight different than SA/CA's. They don't lock lips, they hit the flanks and they are WAY quicker fish than SA/CA cichlids so they would end up killed or too stressed because of the Mbuna.

They need veggies and not meat so their diet is different. M. chipokae is more of a meat eater than the others but they are the most aggressive Mbuna there is and not sure if you want to go there. This is one exerpt from online that someone says about them...

Very mean, I've lost many fish to my other mbuna, but when I introduced my first male chipokae, all the other mbuna were quickly killed along with some heavy duty C.A. cichlids, a couple natives (sunfish and bass), and pretty much anything which wasn't more aggressive than it.

South American and Central Americans just can't compete with that quickness and aggressiveness. I'd just think of getting a setup of one or the other instead of both.
