South America River Basin Project

Hey Undawada, I was out of town over the weekend, but replied to your PM when I got home Sunday night. I'm going to try to reply again, but just in case you don't get this one, at least you know I'm trying! :)

ok from the fishbase pics
True Rummynose----------------------- Firehead------------------------------- False rummynose
3rummies.jpg

you can clearly see "true" rummynoses have yellow on their tails and false rummynoses have a very distintive and darker black/white tail. If yours don't have yellow then it is more than likley to be a firehead tetra.

Incidentally, Wolf, thanks for that little lesson on Rummy identification. Are there any problems with the false rummynose or firehead? Do they grow too large or something?
no problems apart from the std mis-labeling of fish.
actually the "true" rummynoses are the ones that
get big(comparitively) reaching 5cm, as opposed to
3.6 and 3.9 cm for the other two.

from this thread.

Thanks to The-Wolf for the info.

I just made an offer on a 55 gallon tank and it was accepted.

The cost is $300 with stand, lights, canopy, filter, heater, and a bunch of rocks and fake plants.

A 55 gallon in the store, with stand and lights probably twice that much.

The filter that comes with it is a top fin HOB style filter. I will probably sell this cheap to recover some of the cost, since it's a totally insufficient filter for this tank, IMO.

Ditto on the fake plants and rocks.

I didn't realize tanks were that expensive in Canada.

I paid $99 for a new 55g w/lights and $79 for the new metal stand in Chicago. The lights are the same as yours (2 x 20w), which you will need to upgrade if you want to grow live plants with any success.

Good luck with your offer.

I paid $200 for a beginner 55G set up, came with the filter, hood, lights, heater etc... and I paid $200 for the stand. Those were the cheapest in the store. I am glad I got a new tank when I was starting out. Now that I know a little bit more about fish and tanks and what to look for when you buy one used, I will buy used when I am looking to upgrade.

The tank didn't work out.

I was supposed to pick up the tank Saturday, and someone else went to get it Friday, and the seller thought the other guy was me and sold it to him instead.

I guess it doesn't matter, since it looks like I was probably paying too much anyway.

Back to the classifieds...

Wow that was some great info, CFC. I knew about the leaf litter substrate and always thought that was kinda interesting. They say the fish demonstrate instincts with this type of substrate you'd never see with any other type of substrate....like turning over leaves to find something to eat, etc.

Ok, I found another tank in the classifieds message board of my local aquarium club. It's a 75 gallon tank with stand, and comes with an eheim 2217 canister filter for $300!

A much better deal than the 55.

Here's the pic that was listed on the site:

I hope this deal goes through.

Man....I hope it goes through for ya too....that is a good deal even for us in the USA.....I've paid a lot for my 55 gallon, stand, and Eheim 2217. 75 gallons are better IMO as they have more depth.

Good luck.
