i was wondering: how many of you have the constant sound of trickling water running down to your sump? It's just the sound of water running from my overflow box through the pipe and into my sump. Is there any way I can get rid of this sound? It doesn't really bother me, but it might bother my roommate in the future. Suggestions would be helpful.

I don't have a saltwater tank or a sump, but I do have the constant sound of water trickling in my tank from the filters dumping water back into the tank. It's in my bedroom and I've gotten so used to it that I almost can't sleep in complete silence. Then my sister comes in and wants to know why I can't "turn the tank off" because it's annoying her. So I think tank noises are just something that fish people have to get used to!

You could maybe put a little bend in the pipe where it enters the sump, like adding a 45% piece, or alternativley place something to stop the in-flow breaking the surface of the water where it runs into the sump. Like a bit of clean plastic washing up sponge - the open weave green stuff for doing pans, if you get my drift?

Don't put it accross the end of the pipe as you run the risk of it clogging and then causing the water in the pipe to back up, just put it where the flow hits the surface of the sump water to break the fall.

I've done this with the outflow from a skimmer for much the same reason. I use one of those pads cut into two - swap halves each week.

Remember to wash it out from time to time as you don't want it to become a nitrate factory.

The water hitting the sump is not a problem, it's the water traveling down the vinyl tubing...

Any other suggestions?

Can you sketch the design? Or a picture? That would help us out a great deal. Have you looked into Durso Stand pipes? Have you read and looked around at what others have done to silence there designs? Its a common problem, and one with many answers. I "get around" alot too journals, and pick up a few ideas, its sometimes a just a case of copying someone else! :good:

Agree with Mr M. Look into Durso standpipes and see if you can post pics/sketch what your setup looks like

I could really use some help still!

I built this and put it into my overflow.

I am thinking that not enough air is getting into the pipe, because if I put my mouth over the end cap (where the hole is) and just blow air through it, it quiets down considerably. Anyone have any suggestions? I basically have pvc running half way down to my sump and then vinyl tubing that stops just above the top of the water (with a sock over the end of it). Thanks so much!

Brandon.
