I have a minor infestation of pond snails in my 54 gallon. I pull out 5 or 6 a week to throw into the dwarf puffer tank, but I don't know if that will keep the population in check long-term. I don't overfeed, and it's not like there are hundreds of them but I don't want it to become an issue. The problem is, I also have some ramshorn snails in the tank that I want to keep. They seem to breed MUCH more slowly, so the babies can be a good snack for the puffer without tanking over the universe.
Think I should nip this in the bud right now while i can still semi-control the situation, pull out the couple of ramshorns I can find, and leave the rest to an assassin snail or two? I've tried lettuce, and the pond snails couldn't care less. I know snails are actually good for the tank, but I have cories and shrimp and the ramshorns as well. I don't want to get loaches.
I guess my question is, for those with experience, is it better to wait until I can gauge just how quickly they are multiplying or is it better to take care of them now? At any given time, I can count maybe 20 pond snails around the tank which I'm sure means there are more I can't see. I don't mind a few snails but I don't want a million.
