Something's Growing

How do you know it is rotting?. This plant is producing plantlets so it must be happy.
Java fern sometimes actually produces planters because it is about to die and wants to disperse its species, please read up on the species and stop confusing the OP with false information 🙏

I have looked at both my Encyclopedias of water plants. Neither say Java fern will produce plantlets when it is about to die. Both say that its roots like to be in peat and that it hates sand. This tank has a coarse gravel base and is hanging on to it so it should be fine.

Confusing who, this is a plant that is producing young plants. Link me to your literature that states Java Fern produces young when it is about to die. I always like new information like that.

Let’s just stop this childish bickering, I respect your opinion and you do the same k?

Whoa?! Let's pump the breaks a bit here. I appreciate the concern for the fern, but its not dying. It's been in that spot for almost 5 weeks, been showing growth, and is apparently propagating itself. The rhizome is above the substrate and not rotten. I assure you this thing is far from death, unlike my stupid red roots .
While burying the rhizome in sand or soil can cause rot and death, roots planted in gravel with rhizome slightly above seems to work just fine. The roots "grab" a handful of the gravel (I saw this when I moved placement of my other one) to anchor themselves. Unless I see it start to go downhill, it's staying for now. If it ain't broke...

Yep, let's calm it down, guys. The world is probably going to go on. :)

BTW, noobfish, I like "What did I get myself into? Gonna need a second job for this" I tend to say that to myself every time I start researching for a new build.

I have a problem with hobbies. Once I start I go from 0-100 without much consideration and before I know it I'm in the wallet too deep. Like this, she let our son get a pictus and now I've parlayed that into shopping for a new 100+gallon 🤦‍♂️. The better half tries to reign me in, but it's usually too late.

nope, it's dead in 30 years and so is everything on it :(
Well, you might be right, but it probably won't end because of the placement of a java fern rhizome. :)

ha ha ha Yep. For a noob, you have great insight into how this hobby works.

40 odd years of living, it's no different than anything else in life, gotta pay to play. Picked up fishing again last year after 20+yrs off. Somehow have accumulated 18 rods/reels and enough tackle that it fills 2-34G totes in a little over a year. Plus multiple trips around the country to fish different places. I have problems 😔
