Something's Gone Wrong After Water Change

Whats your water stats m8?
I'll go check again before 1st water change ammonia was between 0.50 and 1.0, the tank is currently suffering a mini cycle after experimenting with tetra safestart which started well but then I ran out of, and have been just water changing daily...before 2nd change when I realised there was something wrong ammonia was 0.25.

Ammonia is now between 0 and 0.25 and nitrite is still 0.

what is tap water readings?

it could be a spike in the tap water causing the problems, id move some tank water from a healthy tank in there and see if that solves the issue.

i'll check in a mo, but i changed water in my main tank earlier too, and yet that is fine!
Can a change in water hardness cause this? Just wondering as I am sure the water has gotten harder down here....less bubbles when washing up!

I think one has died....only 2 look relatively alive now.....they're going downhill FAST

I've now lost one....had a look at it, it was ver nicely coloured :( not pale, no signs of illness just it lost control before it died I saw it spinning over and over, just couldn't swim and being dragged by filter swirl I think.....first fish I've lost and not had to cull to put out of its misery :(

just checked tap water....ammonia: 0, nitrite: 0, and nitrate: looks about 1.....nowhere near any dangerous level.

Also I was wrong 3 still look ok and aren't surfacing anymore for whatever reason, I am hoping this is due to the problem going and not them sinking like the other two...one is sat in the glass pebbles and looks to be going the same way as the first fish.

I just can't think why something would go bad after a water changes, especially as both my tanks had a change today and only the QT tank has problems!

update:

I've lost no more.....3 seem to be acting normal *cross fingers* now and the remaining 4th is still down in the glass pebbles but still alive, so I will give it the benefit of the doubt incase it pulls through overnight, hopefully the remaining will be ok.....just have to get them another friend or 2 to make numbers up if they survive to go into my main tank.

I think the mini cycle just took its toll on the fish.
Its funny as fish tend to get through the very high stages then once it goes down they start to die.
Ammonia and nitrite can damage the gills.

I also thought about that earlier, maybe the two that got hit really bad were weakened by it all, poor things :( by getting the safestart again now I hope it'll just sort the mess out quickly for them!

Harley are quite hardy but not in bad water quality like most fish.
Good luck.

update:

the other 3 survived and the 4th that was ropey....is all good too! *yey*
just the one that didn't make it, just tested the water too, pH still quite low (6.6) my main tank runs much higher.....ammonia is just over 0 and nitrite is 0, think getting the safestart helped again, hopefully the mini cycle should fly by now!

Only thing I am watching as it may have been caused by yesterdays stress, the fish which i am pretty sure was the one I thought I'd loose as well has a droplet shape by anus.....not sure if this is poop that not dropped off, or something I need to worry about, I will keep an eye on it, they have been fed this morning.

When you say droplet shape do you mean a clear bubble thing near his anus.

Ok thats good then.
Has he been near an airstone.

no, but they have been playing in the stream of the filter today, I think it may have been funny for a little while and now the flow is back they're all over it....lol.....also yesterday when he was ropey he may have been sucked by the intake......could this have set something off?

Not sure to be honest.
Make sure the bubbles are never beneath the skin as that gas bubble desease.

ahh nah thats ok!
I have a feeling maybe the distress of yesterday had upset his fishy bowls or something, he also spent a loooong time led on the tank floor, so that might have caused something....but he's good now.....any idea if all harleys mix, cos there are so many colours....might get the next ones in black or something!
