I got some meal worms, crickets and locusts today (mostly for the benefit of my Chalceus, Rainbows and DAT, although the DAT doesn't seem to be interested)

Anyway, i am saving the crickets for a few days in the container they came in. I put some lettuce in for them (i believe thats where they get their water from?).

Anyway (and i am serious here), i found it quite touching the way they all made an instant bee-line for the lettuce and started munching on it.

It got me thinking..... i think i have a little buzz about keeping some kinds of insects, but... it's got to be real cheap, there is no budget available for it.

QUESTION.....

I have a spare plastic tiny fish tank available, its about 10" long, 4" deep and 8" high, holds about 10 litres of water, so you know it's small!

What (if any) insects can i keep? I must admit, i will be tempted to use some as fish food and keep some just for the hell of it, OR i guess if i get attached i wont be able to feed them to the fish!

What can i do peeps, any idea's?

erm... well crickets and mealworms STINK after a while :lol:

If you wanna keep some insects and creepy crawlies, there are a few in the pet trade..

Giant African Land Snails
Giant Millipedes
Scorpions
Spiders
Stick Insects
Mantids

all I can think of really lol... not a huge lover of inverts so I don't know much. :(

stick insects are always a good 1 and so so cheap just add leaves and tigs and there as happy as larry :)

most of those would fit in that size tank, as far as i know lol...

i wouldnt suggest the snails though... watching paint dry is more interesting!! :lol:

If you want an insect to inspire you with it's behaviour, get a Mantid.

You could easily house one in there, all you need to feed them is an assortment of waxmoths, flies and any other flying insects you can collect. Even something as gorgeous as this;

Only cost me £5!!!

If you're interested, let me know and I'll send more info your way, here's a pic of where my mantids lived for a bit (till they got upgraded to exoterra penthouses lol);
