Hi everyone!

Just a quick question, I am going fish shopping on saturday and I would like a somewhat unusual fish (or fishes) that is not violent and won't grow beyond 10cm. This is a bit of an odd question I know but I would love a fish that makes people (me included!) say: 'Wow, whats that?!'. Currently I only have 7 Cardinals and will have around 6 male Guppies (only got 3 atm). My water is slightly acidic, about 6.7 and is at 26C. Also any unusual plants that would thrive in moderate lighting would be nice. So anyone with any crazy ideas?

Thank you!! :D

What are the dimensions of the tank, OP?

Oh yea sorry I forgot to mention:

W80cm x D35cm x H45cm

125 Litres

Upside down cat fish are cool but I do not know how big they get:(

Kuhli loaches

Get a group of 6 or more, and plenty of hidey holes. They live on the floor and wander around making faces with their cute little whiskers, and sit up on their little fins. They look like grandpas

They are great to watch! Will just scavenge on the bottom, and take bottom feeder pellets (I feed shrimp pellets). Very docile, will never attack another fish.

Plantwise, check out Windelov Java Ferns and Anubias, both lovely plants, very easy to grow and keep without special equipment (just need the odd feed of fertliser!) They both grow on driftwood etc, not in the gravel.

Wow I just knew you would all have some awesome suggestions! Names I've never heard of!

I love them all, now its just deciding! Ninjouzata, you said the Peaccock Gudgeons were pricy, how much are they as I can't find a price online for some reason. Are they quite hard to come by at fish stores?

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Thanks for the replies everyone!
I'm not sure how much they'd be over there, but here at my LFS, they were 12$ each.
I personally would say they're worth it, but I have seen them for cheaper online so that's good at least, just not sure if the online places I saw ship to the UK, or if you're even willing to buy online.

You can try aquabid, although the ones that I see up right now only ship to US. They are 7-8$ though.

Perhaps someone else might know where to get them, or maybe you could ask your LFS if they can get them in/how much they are.

They're not very brightly coloured, but I tell you which fish of mine nearly everyone who sees them comments on, and that's my marbled hatchets.

I think it's the very unusual shape and habit of hanging, like upside-down schooners. My friend doesn't call them a shoal, she calls them a 'flotilla of hatchets'.

Don't know how they'd be with guppies though; the guppies might upset them.

Thanks guys, I will definitely look into the costs of the peacock gudgeons, I think they look really nice. And the marbled hatches are so unusual, exactly something I would go for! Although I will have to look into the compatibility with their tank mates. So many to choose from! Also the Kuhli loaches are awesome . . . hmmm . . . this is going to be tricky to decide!

Looks like a trip to the LFS is definitely needed tommorow! ;)

@snork: Upside down catfish usually grows between 4-6" they have to be at least in a group of 3 to 6 as individuals tend to be nosy with other fishes' business.

How about a banjo catfish? Stays around 4", are fine alone or in a group, peaceful and definitely a weird looking fish :D
