Something That's Always Confused Me...

living in a hard water area means i should be limited to certain fish and therefore so should the lfs in my town, but it sells all sorts!

Have these fish e.g. tetras, bettas, gouramis, barbs etc all been conditioned to live in our water so they are used to it? i have tetras in my tank cos they were labelled community and the water preferences labelled as not applicable.

Most fish are fine with whatever your water is like (well, barring ridiculous extremes). It can be a problem for breeding certain species, rams are often given as an example, and a few very fragile species can't often survive long term if the pH/hardness is much different to their 'ideal', but in general, it doesn't matter.

I always believed that most fish that are bred on farms have never known what there PH or hardness has been, thus they take what they are given!
