Hello all

I have gone and got my self a floating skimmer for my tropical fish tank. I have never had a skimmer on my filter before and this one works lovely. But the problem i am having is when i feed my fish with food. The food ends up blocking the skimmer holes. So i have opened the skimmer holes up by breaking some of the plastic pins on both sides of the skimmer.. Doing this made it work better and all the food is going down better. But now when i try floarting the skimmer it will float for sometime then it will end up going down. So i have to reset the skimmer settings to get it back up right floating. I like to know if there is anything i can use to help the skimmer to stay up floating right.

Something i can use in my fish tank that will not kill my fish.

This is the floating skimmer that i have got for my fish tank:

What do you say is best to use?

Thank you

Just use it as designed and make the food that floats, not float.  ;)

If you are feeding flake.  Take a pinch as you normally do, and just submerge your fingers under water them release it.  The food will then not float and the fish will still be quite happy to eat it.  I use this technique to get food to some of my fish that are too shy to come up to the surface to feed.

Another alternative to consider for the future is smaller 'pellets' that are designed to sink.  If you get the right kind they will sink fairly slowly, so that the 'top feeders' will stay have plenty of time to feed before it reaches the bottom.  (You may find that you need to feed in smaller quantities to allow this to occur.)

The problem is my fish are very big fish. I feed them mealworms and sometimes crickets as they love the stuff. + bloodworm and fish flakes. But it's the mealworms and crickets that's the problem. The problem i'm having is they eat the stuff like anything but the next day when i look inside the tank there is all bits off crickets and mealworms left over what they have spitted out in the night. Floating at time of the tank and it's that what's blocking the holes on the skimmer and it's a pain in the a** to clean up as the mess gets to parts off the tank i can't get to.

So opening the holes up on the skimmer as worked and bits off food is now going down fine. But it's the floating what is the problem now.
Any idea on what's best thing to do?

I was looking on YouTube video and one guy used a swimming poor floating toy what kids use. He cut it up and used it to float his floating seaweeds.
I can't remember the name off the stuff he used.. But he used it in his tank with fish and his seaweed.

Thank you

I have a skimmer attached to my filter, all I do is remove it when I feed the fish, once all the food has gone put it back on again.
