My Tiger Oscar And Jack Dempsey seem to be friendly a little to friendly if you ask me. They are all was together and have the same territory they don't fight or nip or make fight with each other. They are all was together laying on each other or just swimming together is this something unheard of I know for sure the Oscar is a girl but Not sure about the JD......What should I think? is it possible they could mate?

I am pretty sure o's and jd's cant cross. How do you know your oscar is a female? Do you have a picture of your jd?

Dont knock it, if they get on great, I seriously doubt its possible for them to cross bred.

if your JD has longer flowing fins then he is male try looking it up on google

I'm guessing the fish are Juveniles, if so things may quickly change once they mature, or they may even continue to co-habit peacefully, only time will tell

The only way to sex Oscars is by looking at their breeding tubes, and obviously these are only shown when they breed and no they can't crossbreed

From reading another of the OP's threads Davo, the Oscar is 6", the JD 8" apparently. Im suprised they get along so well, but stranger things have happened.

hmm so not juvis then, thanks minx

I also found another post saying that this is their first feed? So that suggests they've only been in the tank a few days at most ? meaning that their current behaviour is going to be pretty much irrelevant

yeah the JD is about 8 inches and the T-O is about 6. I'm just really amazed, but I did just add them yesterday. So maybe the weirdness of a new tank if making them less aggressive and more unconvertible?? At my LFS there where 2 tanks of Medium to large fish one was all Oscars where I got my Oscar, but the one that I got the JD out of had a variety of fish from XL Oscars to XL Texas/ and a few other really big fish, the JD that I got was by fare the smallest fish in the tank. I have know idea if this matters, but as big as he is he was definitely the little guy in that tank...

That explains why they arent being aggressive to each other then, as they havent established their own territories yet, when they do, watch them closely for any signs of bullying, Id suprised if there wasnt some in the future, even minor squabbles. I dont know how you have the tank set up, but plenty of seperate areas would be a good idea, plants (fake or they will rip them up) to limit line of sight issues and you could be ok.

Well here is 2 pics of the tank set up I did it really fast so there not to great.

Its 100g I read that they need 55g minimum so I think ill be ok people have keep them in tanks allot smaller..

If you say a general rule (which there are always exceptions), I would have a 75G min for a single oscar and a 45G min for the JD. And if I was planning for the two, I would get a 125G and up with bogwood and fake plants to give plenty of room for territory and dividing lines.... but if your cichlids are living peacefully, the 100G should be enough room for them to live. I would just make sure u have plenty of the filtration (6-8x turnover) to handle the waste of the oscar when it reaches adult size and would def keep up on the water changes, atleast 15-20% every week, no matter what.

For future, planning on the worst case is always the best idea, but as said, if things are peaceful for now, no need to change, just watch as the oscar grows as it's territoritality could grow and it could turn on the JD.

Ox :good:

Any time you are dealing with a mix of cichlids like that you should keep a divider handy. It may work long term, it could go south in a hurry.

maybe its just me but if you look at the second pic of the tank the fish there looks nothing like any O or JD I have seen it almost looks like a BP
