ok i have a mysterious carpet of brown things on the gravel in one of my aquariums. it is a small tank with a just a betta, a shrimp and a couple of live plants, heated to about 26 degrees C. there are also some 'unwanted' small snails in there, quite a few but not so many that i'm annoyed by it.

my first thought was that it is brown algae but this brown stuff is only on the bottom, looking closely it looks like they're eggs (similar to brine shrimp eggs but a darker brown) but there are literally MILLIONS of them, i don't see how they can be snail eggs as usually i find them on the leaves, and there is only one shrimp (i don't know if they can reproduce asexually?) and this shrimp has actually disappeared, i cannot find it.

does anybody have any idea what this brown stuff could be? and if there is anything i should do?

i'll post a photo if needed.

thanks.
